Bluejays earn one singles victory against Hawkeyes
IOWA CITY, IOWA -- The Creighton women's tennis team concluded its weekend trip to the Hawkeye State with a 6-1 loss against Iowa at the Hawkeye Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Bluejays opened the season by falling to Drake in Des Moines, Iowa on Friday.
On Saturday, Iowa claimed victories at the No. 2 and 3 doubles positions to earn the first point of the overall match. Creighton's Claire Embree and Michaela Henne fell 6-1 at No. 2, and Celine Massereau and Erin Epperson dropped a 6-2 decision at No. 3.
The Hawkeyes earned straight-sets victories at the top four singles slots to claim the dual. During the No. 5 singles match, Embree battled to a third-set 10-point tiebreaker before falling. The junior fell 6-2 in the opening frame before flipping the score and winning by the same score in the second. Iowa's Adorabol Huckleby won the deciding tiebreaker 10-6 to give the Hawkeyes their fifth singles win.
Laura Higueras picked up Creighton's lone win on Saturday. The freshman won 7-6, 6-4 at No. 6 singles to improve to 2-0 during the dual season.
"Today was a tough day against a great team," coach Jean Lily said. "We played well at times and well at positions, but it was not enough to win.
"We will continue to work hard to improve for next week."
The Bluejays return to the courts on Jan. 27 against Nebraska-Omaha at the Hanscom Tennis Center to start a stretch of six consecutive matches in Omaha.
