#12 Men's Soccer Downs Xavier 3-1, Remains Unbeaten During BIG EAST Play

Tor Trosten tallied three points with a goal and an assist as Creighton improved to 5-0-0 in league play
CINCINNATI, Ohio – The No. 12 Creighton men's soccer team remained unbeaten in BIG EAST play with a 3-1 win at Xavier on Friday night.
The Bluejays improved to 5-0-0 in league play and 9-2-1 overall, while the Musketeers fell to 2-2-1 during BIG EAST matches and 4-4-5 overall.
Tor Trosten tallied his first three points in a Creighton uniform with an assist on the Bluejays' first goal and a goal of his own for the final score of the match. Akeem Ward scored the game-winning goal during the 58th minute.
Creighton took an early lead as Sven Koenig converted his BIG EAST-leading seventh goal of the season during the third minute. The Bluejays sent a handful of passes down the left flank before Trosten found Koenig in the middle of the box. The senior slotted the ball inside the near post and gave the Bluejays a 1-0 advantage. Luke Haakenson also recorded an assist on the play.
With about seven minutes to play in the first half, Xavier had a chance to tie the match with a free kick from about 25 yards from the front of the goal. The Musketeers sent the ball towards the right post, but a header went high and wide to the left.
Paul Kruse ended the first 45 minutes with a save on a loose ball in front the net during the closing seconds. Xavier had a corner kick opportunity that was headed up towards the end line before Kruse controlled the ball and punted it down field as time expired.
Both teams attempted five shots during the opening half of action.
Xavier found an equalizer during the 50th minute. Simen Hestnes, the BIG EAST's leader in points, beat Kruse towards the far post to tie the match at 1-1.
Ward pushed the Bluejays back ahead with a goal during the 58th minute. Ward raced towards the end line before sending a shot towards the far post that was deflected over Xavier's goalkeeper. Ward's second goal of the season gave Creighton a 2-1 lead with just over 30 minutes to play in regulation.
Trosten extended the Bluejays' lead to two goals during the 84th minute. Yudai Tashiro recovered a ball after a corner kick and sent it towards Trosten in front of the goal who flicked the ball over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net for Creighton's third goal of the night.
Tashiro recorded assists on each of the final two goals of the match.
The Bluejays ended the match with a 16-13 advantage in shots.
Kruse tallied a season-high six saves during his ninth victory of the year.
Creighton is off to its best start in BIG EAST play since 2015 when the Bluejays started 6-0-0.
Creighton will stay on the road and plays its final nonconference match of the regular season on Tuesday night at Akron. Kickoff between the Bluejays and Zips is scheduled for 6 p.m. Central.
