Volleyball Sweeps Georgetown For Seventh Straight Win

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The No. 10 Creighton Volleyball team won its seventh straight match on Friday with a 3-0 victory at third-place Georgetown.

Scores of the match in favor of league-leading Creighton (15-4, 7-0 BIG EAST) were 25-17, 25-20, 25-15. Georgetown dropped to 12-8 overall and 5-3 in the BIG EAST, but still owns its most wins and league wins since 2011.

"I thought overall we played a pretty good match," said Creighton coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "Georgetown's a much-improved team and we knew we'd need to play well to be successful. I thought we had pretty good set distribution and followed our game plan well."

Creighton trailed 6-5 early in the first set before senior Samantha Bohnet embarked on a 6-0 serving run. The Bluejays would not be threatened after that, as both Megan Ballenger and Jaali Winters provided five kills and Madelyn Cole added nine assists and five digs to lead a Bluejay offense that hit .423 in a 25-17 opening set victory.

The second set seemed to be following a similar pattern after Creighton bolted to a 16-9 lead, but the Hoyas caught up and drew within one at 18-17 before a pivotal serving error. The Hoyas stayed close, but couldn't overcome six serving errors in the second set. CU took a 2-0 lead to the locker room after a kill from Kloth preceded Kloth and Naomi Hickman's block of Olivia King on set point.

Creighton took a 6-2 lead early in the third set and did not trail again. The Hoyas drew within 11-9 before a 5-0 serving run by Brittany Witt put CU in the driver's seat for its 11th win in as many all-time meetings over Georgetown.

Winters and Kloth each had 10 kills for CU, while Cole notched a double-double with team-highs of 23 assists and 12 digs. Naomi Hickman paced the Bluejays with five blocks. Creighton recorded 36 kills, five aces, 42 digs and nine blocks on .318 hitting overall.

Georgetown senior Alyssa Sinnette topped all players with 11 kills, but Preseason All-BIG EAST pick Symone Speech was limited to seven kills. The Hoyas finished with 35 kills, three aces, 36 digs and three blocks on .123 hitting. GU also had 12 service errors on the evening.

The match capped a busy day for the Bluejays, who spent the morning touring The White House. "One of the things we talk about when recruiting is building our young women as people," said Booth. "We go to some of the best cities in the world and try to take care of matches, but also want to enjoy these incredible cities. It's the first time our team has had the chance to go to the White House and it was neat to see it."

Creighton returns to action on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT when it visits Villanova.

NOTES: Creighton spent the morning touring the White House ... Jaali Winters set the 79th school-record of her career early in the first set with a kill to give her 1811.5 career points, breaking a mark previously held by Leah Ratzlaff ... Creighton is now 22-1 in its last 23 matches in the Eastern time zone ... Creighton's seven straight wins are tied for the eighth-longest win streak in program history ... Creighton has won 112 straight matches when hitting .300 or better and 69 straight matches against BIG EAST teams when winning the third set ... Brittany Witt finished with nine digs, snapping her streak of 21 straight matches in double-figures dating to last season.
