Cross Country Teams Take Eighth At BIG EAST Championships

CARMEL, Ind. -- The Creighton men's and women's cross country teams kicked off their postseason schedules on Saturday with a pair of eighth-place finishes at the BIG EAST Championships, presented by Jeep, which took place at the Northview Church Course in Carmel, Ind.
The Bluejay teams ran a pair of young line-ups on the day, racing eight freshmen, five sophomores, four juniors and no seniors among its 17 competitors.
The women's team finished in eighth out of 10 teams with a team score of 238 in the 6K race. The Bluejays finished ahead of ninth place Seton Hall who scored a 251 and finished behind seventh place DePaul who scored a 232. Villanova had six of the top eight finishers and home first place with a score of 21, while Georgetown finished in second with a score of 73. Villanova's Caroline Alcorta topped the field of 85 competitors with a time of 20:12.4, just ahead of teammate Rachel McArthur by 4.1 seconds.
Leading the way for the Creighton women in 25th place was freshman Danielle Hotalling, who finished in a time of 21:50.2. Next was classmate Marguerite Hendrickson who ran a time of 23:35.1 to take 54th. Right after Hendrickson in 55th place was Caroline Pass, who clocked a time of 23:35.2. Erin Smith finished in 60th with a time of 23:54.9. Following Smith in 66th place was Katie Fukushima who crossed the finish line in 24:06.7. After Fukushima in 70th place was Erica Cradeur, who had a time of 24:16.1. Rounding out CU's contingent were Amy Leasure (77th, 24:51.9), Haley Fye (79th, 25:08.6) and Chloe Cassens (80th, 25.22.3).
Creighton's women's team featured four freshmen, four sophomores and one junior in Chris Gannon's first season as head coach.
The men's team finished in eighth out of nine teams in the 8K race with a score of 236, just behind DePaul's 209 points. Georgetown won its fourth straight league title with a score of 32, outracing runner-up Villanova's 45 points.
Chase Howard led the way for the Bluejays by finishing in 34th with a time of 25:54.1. Nick Monkemeyer was in 57th after running a time of 26:52.9. Max Wehrle clocked a time of 27:04.3 to finish in 61st place. Nate Fedel finished next for the Bluejays in 66th place, which was earned with a time of 27:36.4. Following Fedel was Boston Small in 68th with a time of 27:50.0. Rounding out the Bluejay competitors were freshmen Jackson Stamper (72nd, 28:00.4), Aidan King (76th, 28:34.4) and Bryce Shirley (85th, 30:02.8).
Creighton ran four freshmen, one sophomore and three juniors in the men's meet.
The men's race featured 85 competitors and was won by Villanova's Casey Comber in a time of 23:59.7.
Next up for both teams is the NCAA Regional Championships in Peoria, Ill., on November 9th.
