Junior setter led Creighton in digs during a week it clinched the BIG EAST title
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Volleyball setter Madelyn Cole has been named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, league officials announced on Tuesday.
A junior from Dallas, Texas, Cole led Creighton with 4.00 digs, 10.17 assists and 0.83 aces per set while hitting .400 in a pair of 3-0 wins last weekend. The victories clinched a fifth straight BIG EAST regular-season title for the Bluejays, and the No. 1 seed in this year's BIG EAST Championship.
Â
Cole started her week with 32 assists, eight digs, three blocks, two aces and two kills in a 3-0 victory over Georgetown. She then had 29 assists, a season-high 16 digs, three blocks, three aces and two kills on .500 hitting in a 3-0 triumph vs. Villanova.
Â
Cole now leads Creighton with 1,066 assists and 37 aces.
This is Cole's first BIG EAST Player of the Week recognition of the fall, though she did previously earn All-Tournament Team honors following the SMU DoubleTree Classic as well as the Bluejay Invitational. Cole is the fourth Creighton woman this year to be named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, joining Naomi Hickman (Sept. 4), Jaali Winters (Sept. 11) and Brittany Witt (Sept. 18).
Ranked ninth nationally, Creighton (24-4, 16-0 BIG EAST) closes the regular-season this weekend with home matches on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. against Providence.
