Former Burke standout will become the latest local star to play for Creighton
OMAHA, Neb. -- Omaha Burke product Shereef Mitchell has signed a letter-of-intent to continue his education and basketball career at Creighton.
Mitchell is a 6-foot-1 guard who graduated from Burke High School this spring before heading to Sunrise Christian Academy in Bel Aire, Kansas, this fall. He will have four years of eligibility when he enrolls at Creighton next fall.
"We're excited to have Shereef join our program," said Creighton head coach Greg McDermott. "It's always important for us to keep some of the best local basketball players in Omaha. His ability to play with pace, shoot the three-point shot, create for his teammates and be an elite defensive player is a perfect fit for our style of play."
Mitchell led Class A in scoring at 24.6 points per game last season with the Bulldogs. He was named the honorary captain of the Omaha World-Herald and Lincoln Journal Star's All-Nebraska teams, as well as the Nebraska Gatorade boys basketball player of the year. He also averaged 6.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game.
Mitchell was a second-team All-State selection as a junior when he averaged 22.1 points per game. He averaged 13.2 points a game as a sophomore after 7.9 points per contest during his freshman campaign. In his career Mitchell scored a school-record 1,582 points, adding 255 assists and 147 steals.
Through seven games this season at Sunrise Christian Academy, Mitchell is averaging 16 points, six assists and three steals per game.
He also drew rave reviews with the Omaha Sports Academy AAU team he played for during the summer.
McDermott's 2018-19 Creighton club hosts Ohio State on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. at CHI Health Center Omaha.
