Creighton becomes first team in league history with five straight outright titles
OMAHA, Neb. -- Senior All-Americans Taryn Kloth and Jaali Winters combined for 27 kills on .500 hitting to lead ninth-ranked Creighton to an unprecedented fifth straight outright BIG EAST Volleyball regular-season title on Friday with a 3-0 sweep over Providence.
Set scores were 25-12, 25-19, 25-22.
Kloth led Creighton (25-4, 17-0 BIG EAST) with 14 kills in 26 swings and Winters had 13 kills on 22 swings as both women hit .500. Madelyn Cole had 34 assists and served up a match-high four aces, and Brittany Witt owned a match-best 10 digs. Creighton hit .368 and had 46 kills, 13 aces, 39 digs and two blocks on .368 hitting.
Providence (8-20, 2-15 BIG EAST) was topped by nine kills from Jenae Alderson, while Lindsey Schaible supplied six kills in seven swings and tallied a match-high four blocks. The Friars had 29 kills, three aces, 27 digs and six blocks on .266 hitting.
Schaible served an ace to open the match and a Bluejay attack error made it 2-0 Friars, but that would be PC's only lead of the evening. Creighton hit .500 in the first set, getting six kills in as many swings from Winters, while holding the Providence attack to six total kills. Thanks to five digs by Witt, Creighton outdug PC 16-6 in the first set win.
Creighton unleashed seven aces in the second set of a 25-19 victory that was interrupted by four challenges and two timeouts. Providence battled and was within two at 17-15 before a kill by Kari Zumach and ace by Samantha Bohnet created some breathing room for the hosts. A kill from Winters sent the Jays to the locker room with a 2-0 lead. Cole had 12 assists, four digs, three aces and two kills in the second set win for the Bluejays.
Creighton raced to a 15-7 lead early in the third set, but a 5-0 service run by Mackenzie Taylor that featured a pair of aces brought the Friars within 19-14. PC would narrow the gap to 23-21 on a 5-0 run on Schaible's serve before a service error brought the Bluejays to match point. PC survived one point before Megan Ballenger pounded a ball to the floor to close out the regular-season title. Creighton had 16 kills in the final set, including five by Kloth, to wrap up a 19th straight set win and sixth consecutive sweep.
The teams will play again on Saturday at 7 p.m. at D.J. Sokol Arena, with Creighton honoring Kloth, Winters, Samantha Bohnet and Kelsey O'Connell following the match as part of Senior Night festivities.
