Despite Strong Effort, Women's Basketball Downed by #24 Drake 85-69

Omaha, Neb. -- The Creighton women's basketball team offered a stiff challenge to #24 Drake before falling 85-69 on Wednesday, Nov. 28.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 1-4 on the season, while Drake moved to 7-1 overall.
Both teams struggled in the opening quarter as Creighton opened 2-for-10 and Drake went 3-for-10. Each team began find its rhythm in the closing moments of the period with sophomore Tatum Rembao giving the Bluejays the lead at 9-8 with a trey with 1:43 remaining, yet Drake closed the quarter with eight straight points to take a 16-9 edge into the second.
Drake's run continued early in the second as the Bulldogs extended their lead to 13 at 22-9 (8:28). Creighton responded with a 9-0 run on treys from senior Audrey Faber and junior Olivia Elger. Faber started the run with a trey from the left wing, then Elger canned back-to-back from long range to make it 22-18 (7:00). The Bulldogs pushed the lead back to double-digits at 33-21 (2:25), but another Creighton run sent the game to halftime with Creighton down 36-29.
The second half saw Creighton score the first five points on a three-pointers from sophomore Temi Carda and a driving layup from senior Brooke Kissinger to bring the Bluejays within two at 36-34 (8:52). Drake responded with an interior bucket, but another trey from Carda and a mid-range jumped from junior Morgan Turner gave Creighton a 38-37 lead with 8:11 left. Creighton held a 51-50 edge with 5:48 left in the frame, but a five point burst from the Bulldogs put Drake back on top. The two teams battled back and forth throughout the remainder of the third period as Drake held a slim 58-55 advantage heading to the fourth quarter.
Early in the final frame the Bulldogs pushed their edge back out to 10 at 66-56 (7:23), going to to claim the 85-69 win.
Carda led Creighton with 20 points in the game, while Faber and freshman Payton Brotzki each reached double figures with 11 points. Drake got a game-high 23 points from Becca Hittner as well as 17 points and 13 rebounds from Sara Rhine.
Creighton returns to the hardwood on Sunday, Dec. 2 as the Bluejays battle intrastate rival Nebraska at 1:00 pm in D.J. Sokol Arena.
