Audrey Faber Drops in 27 points in the loss
Omaha, Neb. -- Despite a 27-point outburst from senior Audrey Faber, the Creighton women's basketball team dropped its season-opener 77-65 to South Dakota on Wednesday, Nov. 7.
The loss moved the Bluejays to 0-1 on the season, while the Coyotes opened the season 1-0.
Both teams came out of the gates quickly as the Bluejays hit five of their first seven shots, including three from long range to race out to an 13-6 edge with 5:30 left in the opening frame. South Dakota responded by knocking down nine straight over the next seven minutes. The result was a Coyote 22-21 lead at the end of the opening period and a 33-21 USD edge before the Coyotes missed again with just under eight minutes left in the first half.
Freshman Chloe Dworak gave the Bluejays a spark off the bench as her three-pointer with 4:16 left in the second started a 9-1 Creighton run. Fellow freshman Peyton Brotzki followed with two from the charity stripe, then Faber knocked down two more free throws to make it 33-28 (3:00). After South Dakota went 1-of-2 form the stripe, sophomore Temi Carda knocked down two more free throws to get the Bluejays within four at 34-30 (2:39). South Dakota, however, scored the final six points of the frame to take a 40-30 lead into halftime.
Throughout much of the third period the two squads traded buckets, but South Dakota get the best of the exchange as the Coyotes extended their lead to as much as 18 (54-36 with 1:53 left in the third) and took a 54-41 edge into the fourth.
Creighton pulled within 10 points twice in the opening moments of the final frame, but were unable to draw any closer.
Faber led all scorers with 27 points, while junior Jaylyn Agnew delivered 14 for the Bluejays. South Dakota got 26 points from Taylor Frederick, while Allison Arens (11 points), Chloe Lamb (10 points) and Madison McKeever (10 points) also finished in double figures.
