Big third quarter helps Creighton overcome halftime deficit
Omaha, Neb. -- A 21-7 run spanning most of the third quarter helped Creighton overcome a halftime deficit to defeat Nebraska, 74-65, at D.J. Sokol Arena on Sunday, Dec. 2. The Bluejay victory clinched a third straight victory over the Huskers for the first time in 45 all-time meetings between the in-state rivals.
Tatum Rembao entered the afternoon averaging 6.8 points per game, but the sophomore provided career-highs with 18 points and six assists. Bluejay teammate Audrey Faber attained her second double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Olivia Elger contributed 16 points.
Creighton (2-4) led 10-8 after the first quarter, as five different Bluejays contributed two points each. Rembao's backcourt steal and score provided the margin, and the Bluejay defense limited NU to 4-for-17 shooting from the field.
Nebraska (2-5) reversed fortunes with an 8-0 run over a span of 74 seconds to move ahead 22-18, with Maddie Simon and Kate Cain scoring all eight Husker points in that span. Creighton would retake the lead after consecutive three-point plays by Temi Carda, only to see Nebraska own the 28-27 halftime edge after a bucket by Grace Mitchell in the final minute of the second quarter.
Carda (8), Rembao (7) and Faber (6) topped CU in the scoring column during the first 20 minutes, with Faber also accumulating team-bests of five rebounds and three blocked shots.
Faber and Elger each scored five points in Creighton's 13-2 run to open the second half as the Bluejays raced to a 40-30 lead. The Bluejays remained in control and took a 48-37 lead on Faber's driving lay-up in the waning seconds of the third quarter before Sam Haiby's 35-foot three-pointer banked in at the buzzer for Nebraska's first three-pointer of the game in 13 tries.
Rembao scored on consecutive possessions early in the fourth quarter as the Bluejays went ahead 60-47 and force a Husker timeout. NU responded with five points in a row before CU freshman Rachael Saunders' putback returned the lead to double-figures with 4:20 to play.
Nebraska drew within 62-57 with 3:20 to play, but a Faber lay-up and Elger three-pointer upped the margin to double-figures (67-57) with 1:55 to go. NU trimmed the gap to 69-63 on a floater with 44.7 left by Leigha Brown.
Nebraska again cut the margin to five at 69-64 before an Elger free throw with 24 seconds left made it a six-point game. Rembao and Saunders each drained two free throws in the final 15 seconds to close out the victory.
Haiby topped NU with 17 points, while Cain scored 12 to reach double-figures. The Huskers entered the game with 10 straight contests of five or more three-pointers, but sank just 2-of-22 long-range shots on the afternoon.
