Creighton heads into holiday break with a 110-60 victory over Division III Coe
OMAHA, Neb. -- Freshman Marcus Zegarowski drained six of Creighton's BIG EAST record 22 three-pointers to help the Bluejays head into the holiday break with a 110-60 victory over Division III Coe on Thursday.
Creighton (8-4), which entered the week leading the nation in three-point percentage at 44.8 percent, drained 22-of-37 shots from long-range to break the program and league record of 21 that it set in 2014 in a rout at No. 4 Villanova.
Martin Krampelj had three dunks, a putback and a three-pointer in the first four minutes to help Creighton to a 13-6 lead. Krampelj would finish with his second game of the week with five dunks, tallying 18 points and five rebounds in just 11 minutes of playing time.
The Bluejays embarked on a 19-3 run to open up a 32-12 lead by the midpoint of the first half, and led 60-31 at the intermission. Krampelj had 16 and Ty-Shon Alexander 11 points in the opening stanza, which saw CU shoot 24-of-36 percent from the floor and 12-of-20 from deep.
The Creighton lead expanded to 40 at 88-48 with 6:47 remaining on a three-pointer by Kaleb Joseph, and grew as large as 51 (105-54) in the final three minutes before settling for a 110-60 victory. A three-pointer by Connor Cashaw tied the school and BIG EAST mark, and a trey by Zegarowski in the final minute broke the mark.
A pair of Bluejay freshmen had season-high scoring efforts in the win, as Zegarowski (20) and Samson Froling (17) combined to make 14-of-19 shots from the floor. Also in double-figures were Krampelj (18), Joseph (11) and Alexander (14), while Mitch Ballock and Joseph each contributed seven assists.
Creighton won the rebound battle 46-14 and did not surrender an offensive rebound en route to a 21-0 lead in second chance points and a 14-0 edge in fast break points. Creighton's bench outscored Coe's 63-25 and helped the Jays maintain a 38-10 advantage in the paint.
Coe was led by 15 points from Adam McDermott, the godson and nephew of Creighton head coach Greg McDermott. The Kohawks made 16-of-36 three-pointers, setting a CHI Health Center Omaha record for a Creighton opponent.
Creighton returns to the court next Thursday at 7 p.m. when it hosts UMKC in the final non-conference tilt of the season.
NOTES: Creighton improved to 63-2 all-time when scoring 100 or more points, and the season-high 110 points were tied for the 10th-most in program history for one game ... Creighton has won 36 straight games (dating to a Feb. 26, 1977 loss) when scoring 100 or more points ... Among Creighton's arena records set were for three-pointers made (22), field goals made (42), rebound margin (+32) and fewest fouls (6) ... Creighton's 29 assists and 64.6 percent shooting were season-bests ... The game and statistics count for Creighton, but not for Coe since the Kohawks are a Division III school ... Ten of Creighton's 11 players to appear made at least one three-pointer. Only Christian Bishop, who didn't attempt a trey, did not make a trifecta ... The first foul of the game was not called until 4:06 remained in the first half. By that point, it was 54-26 and the teams had combined for 55 shot attempts.
