Bluejays move to 9-9 on the year after impressive afternoon
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's tennis team overpowered Saint Louis in Omaha on Friday afternoon, taking a 7-0 victory in the penultimate game of its regular season.
The Bluejays improved to 9-9 on the year after winning their seventh of their last eight matches.
Armando Gandini and Brooks Kendall gave Creighton an early advantage in doubles action, taking a win at the No. 3 with a 6-0 sweep. The Bluejays clinched the point in doubles shortly after with a 6-1 rout from the duo of Daniel Lopez-Rey and Mac Mease at No. 2. Up 4-2, Stratton Brown and Alex Koca's match was discontinued to begin singles play.
Continuing the hot start for the Bluejays, Koca recorded two 6-4 wins at No. 4 to push the Bluejay lead to 2-0. Coming back to win the first set 7-6, Kendall scored a 6-2 win in the second frame at No. 1 to put the Bluejays on the verge of clinching the team win. Brown sealed the win, but not after a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 battle at the No. 2 position.
Gandini also finished the day out with a win, bouncing back from a 6-3 first set loss by winning the next two 6-2, 6-2. Lopez-Rey and Jose Oscar Diaz only needed two sets each to close out the day and sweep Saint Louis, scoring 7-5, 6-4 and 6-4, 7-5 wins, respectively, to end the afternoon.
"Our guys played very strong doubles to start," said head coach Tom Lilly. "After that it was all about winning close sets and matches throughout the singles lineup. This match was much closer than what the 7-0 final score suggested."
The Bluejays will wrap up the regular season on Sunday, April 22 when they host Doane. Doubles action is scheduled to begin at 1 pm.
