Freshman shines in first league championship showing
OKATIE, S.C. -- Nate Vontz led the Creighton men's golf team to a ninth place finish at the 2018 BIG EAST Championship Presented by Jeep, at the Callawassie Island Golf Club in Okatie, S.C., on Tuesday.
The Bluejays improved from an opening round 321 to shoot a 320 on Monday before wrapping up Tuesday with a 304 score. The final round 304 marked CU's best final round score at a league championship event since the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Championship. The Bluejay total of 945 (+81) was 13 shots behind St. John's for eighth place.
Vontz's BIG EAST Championship debut saw the Lincoln, Neb., native shoot loops of 80, 75 and 76 for a 23rd place finish. It's the best showing by a Creighton freshman at a league championship since Johnny Spellerberg tied for 23rd place at the 2012 MVC Championship.
Sophomore Andrew McCormick also made his initial BIG EAST Tournament appearance and tied for 31st overall with a 238 total. He shot matching rounds of 80 on Sunday and Monday before closing with a 78 on Tuesday.
Bradley Keyer placed 36th with a 242 aggregate. Keyer opened with rounds of 82 and 86 before a 74 on Tuesday that was the team's best round of the event.
Seniors Charlie Bolton and Trey Petitt wrapped up their Bluejay careers during the event. Bolton shot 79-81-73 and his 243 tied him for 37th, while Petitt's 85, 84 and 76 was good for a tie for 40th place with a 245 overall sum.
Georgetown won its second title in the last three years to complete a sweep of the men's and women's golf titles this spring. The Hoyas posted a three-day score of 887 (+20) to edge runner-up Marquette by three shots. Marquette freshman Hunter Eichhorn won medalist honors with a 2-under score of 214. That was two shots better than teammate Matt Murlick and Seton Hall's Chris Yeom.
The meet featured nine teams (Providence does not offer men's golf) and 45 individuals overall on the par 72 course that measured 6,993 yards.
The BIG EAST Championship was the final competition of the season for the Bluejays. Petitt (76.3), McCormick (76.9) and Bolton (77.1) led the team in scoring average, while the team combined for 12 individual rounds of par or better during the 29 rounds of competition.
