OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton senior Owen Price birdied the 16th and 17th holes to win the Bluejay Invitational by one shot on Tuesday afternoon at Shadow Ridge Country Club in Omaha, Neb.
Price topped the field of 45 entrants with a 6-under score of 210 following rounds of 70, 69 and 71 to finish as the only player in the field to shoot below par all three rounds.Â
A Tacoma, Wash., native, the victory is Price's first collegiate victory and third top-five finish. After birdies on 16 and 17, Price smashed his drive on the 18th hole to the middle of the fairway, then hit an approach shot that left him with a challenging 35-foot uphill putt. He lagged his first putt to two feet before tapping in for the victory. He is Creighton's first medalist in a tournament since Grant Feldman won the Bluejay Invitational last Sept. 15-16 with a 207 aggregate. Price tied for 13th in that event with a 2-under total of 214.
Price edged out Northern Iowa's Tanner Dinnebier (74-68-69=211) for the title. The low round of the tournament was shot by Iowa's Jack McCarty, who fired seven birdies in an opening-round 65 on Monday.
Fellow Bluejay senior Brock Kuhlman also posted his second straight top 10 finish, tying for eighth place after circuits of 73, 71 and 72 to shoot an even-par 216.
Radley Mauney had CU's best round of the tournament with a collegiate-low 68 in the opening round on Monday, following that up with scores of 74 and 76 to tie for 14th place.
Tyler Strong (71-75-73=219) tied for 17th and Andrew Nietfeldt (73-74-73=220) tied for 19th place. Henry Kuehne (75-74-77=226) finished in a tie for 24th place.
Rounding out the Bluejay line-up was Carson Wright (79-76-75=230) in 30th and Taten Mauney (76-80-75=231) in a tie for 31st in his collegiate debut. JJ Bordeaux (78-79-78) took 41st.
No team scores were kept at the event, which was played on the Par 72 layout that measured 7,099 yards.
Creighton wraps up the fall schedule on Oct. 19-20 in West Des Moines, Iowa, at the Zach Johnson Invitational.
