Junior libero had 54 digs in three matches last weekend
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Volleyball libero Brittany Witt has been named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for the first time this fall, and sixth time in her career.
Witt averaged 5.40 digs per set in three matches at the Illini Classic last weekend as Creighton went 2-1.
Â
The 2017 BIG EAST Libero of the Year had 12 digs and was not aced in CU's 3-0 win over Lipscomb to open the weekend. She then had 16 digs in a sweep over UNI as Creighton avenged a loss from three weeks earlier.
Â
The Omaha native wrapped up the weekend with a season-high 26 digs in a four-set match at No. 8 Illinois, matching the most by a Bluejay in any contest this season.
Â
Witt has now had 10 or more digs in a career-high 15 straight matches, and is one of four players in program history to have 10+ digs in each of CU's first dozen matches of any season.
Witt's senior teammate Taryn Kloth made the BIG EAST's weekly honor roll. Georgetown's Symone Speech was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week, and St. John's Efrosini Alexakou took home Freshman of the Week accolades.
Â
The 10th-ranked Bluejays (8-4) open defense of their four consecutive BIG EAST regular-season and tournament titles this Friday when they host DePaul at 7 p.m. Preseason BIG EAST favorite Marquette, the nation's No. 21 team, visits D.J. Sokol Arena on Sunday at 1 p.m. in what will be the BIG EAST's first regular-season match-up between ranked teams since October 29, 2005, when No. 7 Notre Dame hosted No. 6 Louisville.
