#12 Men's Soccer Claims League Win At Villanova, Extends Shutout Streak To Three

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Luke Haakenson scored during the 69th minute as the No. 12 Creighton men's soccer team defeated Villanova 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Higgins Soccer Complex, and extended its shutout streak to three matches.
The Bluejays improved to 2-0-0 during BIG EAST play and 5-1-1 overall, while the Wildcats fell to 0-2-0 in league action and 5-3-0 overall.
Haakenson delivered the game-winning goal with a header inside the left post during the 69th minute. Akeem Ward dribbled down the left side of the 18-yard box and sent the ball towards the near post where Haakenson positioned himself in front of the Villanova goalkeeper and headed the ball into the back of the net for his second goal of the season. Ward earned his team-leading fourth assist on the play.
Freshman goalkeeper Paul Kruse recorded three saves as Creighton tallied its third consecutive shutout and fifth of the season. The freshman owns a 0.28 goals against average through the first seven matches of the season.
Creighton has not allowed a goal during the past 295:10 of action.
The Bluejays held an 8-3 edge in shots during the first half but managed only one shot on goal as the two teams entered the break in a scoreless deadlock. During the 42nd minute, Haakenson found Anthony Macchione on the run at the top of the 18-yard box. Macchione fired a shot on goal before the Wildcats' Carson Williams recorded his first and only save of the contest.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Villanova's Zach Zandi launched a shot on goal but Kruse secured the ball for his first save. The host Wildcats continued to apply pressure and forced Kruse to make his second save during the 57th minute . Villanova came up empty on its third and final shot on goal of the match during the 83rd minute.
Creighton and Villanova combined for five shots on goal as Haakenson's goal marked the Bluejays' only shot on target during the second half. Overall, Creighton ended the afternoon with a 16-7 edge in shots and 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Bluejays posted their first BIG EAST road victory since Sept. 24, 2016 at DePaul. Creighton was winless during its last eight regular-season league contests away from Omaha.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Tuesday night for a nonconference match at Morrison Stadium against Jacksonville. Kickoff between the Bluejays and Dolphins is scheduled for 7 p.m.
