Sven Koenig recorded his second multi-goal match of the year and now paces Creighton with five goals this season
OMAHA, Neb. -- Sven Koenig scored two second-half goals as the No. 9 Creighton men's soccer team extended its winning streak to five matches with a 2-1 victory against Jacksonville on Tuesday night at Morrison Stadium.
The Bluejays improved to 6-1-1 overall, while the Dolphins dropped to 1-8-0.
After a scoreless first half, Koenig tallied goals during the 59th and 71st minutes and propelled Creighton to a 2-0 lead.
The senior scored his first goal of the night after a pass from Yudai Tashiro glanced off a Jacksonville defender to the waiting feet of Koenig. Koenig finished off the play with a pair of dribbles towards the center of the box before slotting the ball with his right foot inside the far post as Creighton gained a 1-0 lead.
Koenig extended the Bluejays' advantage with about 20 minutes to play. Kuba Polat launched a through ball from Creighton's defensive half of the pitch towards the Dolphins' goalkeeper who misplayed it, allowing Koenig to recover the ball and find the back of an empty net for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Jacksonville trimmed Creighton's lead in half with a goal during the 76th minute. Alex Dixon finished off a free kick that was redirected towards the far post where Dixon recorded the Dolphins first and only goal of the match with a header.
The Jacksonville goal ended a Bluejays' steak of 615:59 without allowing a goal at home, which was just 20 minutes shy of matching their longest such streak in program history (636:26).
Creighton launched eight shots, including three on goal, during the first half, but the Bluejays were held out of the scoring column.
Koenig owned one of the Creighton's better chances in the opening 45 minutes with a breakaway opportunity during the 28th minute, but Jacksonville goalkeeper Matt Levy made a save on a low shot.
Creighton ended the match with a 23-5 advantage in shots, as Levy ended the match with seven saves. Paul Kruse made a pair of saves during the Bluejays' fourth victory this season at Morrison Stadium (4-0-1).
Creighton returns to the pitch and resumes BIG EAST play on Saturday at Morrison Stadium against Seton Hall. The Bluejays host the Pirates on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
