Men's Soccer Shuts Out Memphis During Socctoberfest

Luke Haakenson and Sven Koenig each scored during the second-half to lead the Bluejays past Memphis, 2-0
OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton men's soccer team scored a pair of second-half goals to defeat Memphis 2-0 during Friday night's Socctoberfest at Morrison Stadium.
The Bluejays improved to 3-1-1, while the Tigers fell to 2-2-1.
Luke Haakenson scored Creighton's first goal of the match during the 62nd minute. Akeem Ward sent a long ball to Haakenson down the left side of the pitch where he controlled the ball and headed towards the end line. Haakenson kept the ball in bounds and sped past a Memphis defender before sending the ball into the back of the net.
Sven Koenig extended the Bluejays' lead during the 83rd minute. Daniel Espeleta played a ball in the right side of the box to Younes Boudadi. Boudadi redirected the ball to Koenig about seven yards from the front of the goal before the senior slotted the ball inside the far post.
Haakenson and Koenig became Creighton's fifth and sixth goal scorers during the 2018 season, as the Bluejays own six goals from six different players through the first five matches of the season.
Ward extended his team lead in assists with his third, while Boudadi recorded his second of the season and Espeleta tallied the first helper of his Creighton career.
Espeleta also fired a pair of shots on goal during the first half. The freshman sent shots on frame during the sixth and 26th minutes but both were saved. Memphis goalkeeper Tyler Hofmann made a total of five saves during Friday's contest.
The Tigers held a 7-4 edge in shots during the first half, before ending the night with an 11-10 advantage.
Creighton's Paul Kruse tied a season-high with three saves, including two before halftime. The freshman recorded his third shutout of the year, each at Morrison Stadium.
The Bluejays are 2-0-1 at home this season and have outscored the opposition 4-0 during 290 minutes of game action. Creighton plays four of its next five matches at Morrison Stadium.
Friday's match followed the Creighton women's soccer team's 2-1 overtime victory over South Dakota as both soccer programs claimed victories during the Bluejays' seventh annual Socctoberfest event.
The Bluejays are back in action on Sept. 15. Creighton will open BIG EAST play and host Butler at Morrison Stadium at 7 p.m. a week from Saturday for Homecoming.
