Bluejays move into a tie for 3rd place
OMAHA, Neb. -- Four men scored in double-figures to lead Creighton to a 75-61 win over Butler on Friday night before 18,089 fans at CHI Health Center Omaha. The contest was part of Creighton's Ninth Annual Coaches vs. Cancer Pink Out Game, which raised $19,595 for Hope Lodge Nebraska.
Creighton (12-8, 3-4 BIG EAST) moved from a tie for eighth place into a tie for third place with the victory. Butler is now 12-9 (3-5 BIG EAST).
Ty-Shon Alexander led Creighton with 19 points, while Martin Krampelj (16), Davion Mintz (14) and Mitch Ballock (13) each contributed a dozen or more.
Butler was led by 23 points from Kamar Baldwin, but no one else had more than nine.
The teams traded the lead six times in the first 14 minutes before the Jays took the lead for good on a three-point play by Samson Froling made it 24-23 with 6:48 left in the first half. Four Bluejays scored during a 9-0 run that extended CU's lead to 40-30 before the Bulldogs scored twice in the final 21 seconds to trim CU's halftime lead to 40-34.
Butler got no closer than four in the second half after a Baldwin jumper on BU's first trip. CU responded with lay-ups by Krampelj and Mintz, and a three-ball by Alexander pushed the lead to 47-38 and prompted a Butler timeout.
Creighton's lead grew to 56-44 on a three-ball from Ballock with 11:57 left, which would be CU's biggest advantage until the final seconds. Butler got within five at 64-59 after two Jordan Tucker foul shots, but a three-point play by Mintz and two free throws by Alexander moved the lead to 69-59 with 2:44 remaining and started an 11-2 game-ending run.
Creighton would score the game's final six points on a breakaway dunk by Krampelj, two Alexander charity tosses and a lay-up by Alexander.
Creighton hosts St. John's on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
