Women's Soccer Downed 2-1 By Providence on Senior Day

Heinrich Gives Creighton Early Lead with Her 10th Goal
Omaha, Neb. -- Despite a first half goal from freshman Skylar Heinrich, the Creighton women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Providence as the Bluejays honored their nine-person senior class on Saturday, Oct. 19th.
The loss dropped Creighton to 7-6-2 on the season and 1-3-2 in BIG EAST action, while Providence moved to 8-5-2 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play.
Creighton opened up the scoring in the 41st minute of the match. Sophomore Ansley Atkinson sent a long pass into the box as Heinrich dashed down the center of the box to beat the Friars last line of defense. Heinrich launched the ball past Providence goalkeeper Shelby Hogan to give the Bluejays a 1-0 advantage.
The Bluejays fired off nine shots in the first period compared the Providence five, while each goalkeeper collected two saves as Creighton took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Coming out of the break the Friars turned on their offense touching the back of the net in the 50th minute as Hannah McNulty headed a pass from Providence midfield Amber Birchwell into the top left corner of the net for the equalizer. McNulty connected again in the 55th minute beating the Bluejays back line as Elayna Gillakis slid a pass through the box giving McNulty a one-on-one with Bluejay goalkeeper Keelan Terrell and finding the back of the net to give Providence a 2-1 advantage.
Creighton pushed the remainder of the match, firing off 16 shots and forcing Hogan into 10 saves, but could not find the back of the net.The Bluejays held a huge advantage in shots, 25-9, while Providence's Hogan collected 12 saves to Terrell's three. Creighton earned 11 more corners with a 12-1 advantage.
The Bluejays begin a crucial two-match road week at Seton Hall on Thursday, Oct. 24th. The game is slated to kickoff at 5:00 pm.
