Creighton Volleyball Sweeps Xavier in Annual Pink Out Match

Creighton collects 10th straight victory with sweep of Xavier
OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 11 Creighton volleyball team downed Xavier 3-0 to pick up its 16th consecutive victory over the Musketeers, and 10th win in a row overall this fall.
Scores of the Bluejay sweep over Xavier were 25-17, 25-23, 25-15.
Creighton improves to 15-3 on the season and 8-0 in the BIG EAST, while Xavier falls to 7-11 overall and 4-4 in conference play. The Bluejays have now won 27 consecutive regular-season league matches, and 31 in a row over BIG EAST foes when factoring in conference tournament play.
Creighton had 15 kills and hit .333 in the opening set of a 25-17 victory. The Bluejays held the Musketeers to just five kills on -.042 hitting. Tied at 5-5, Creighton pulled away, using a 5-0 run on Megan Ballenger's serve to push the lead to 10-5. Madelyn Cole later served up a 6-0 run of her own, which included an ace serve for the 11th straight match, to extend the lead to 16-7. Xavier got as close as six at 19-13, before freshman Keeley Davis hammered home her seventh kill of the opening frame, to end the set.
Creighton extended their lead to 2-0 entering the intermission with a 25-23 set two victory. The Bluejays pushed their lead to 22-17 on an ace from Davis; before Xavier got within one at 24-23 on a Lauren Hanlon kill. Cole finished off the set with a kill to go with eight assists in the set.
Creighton led the third set from start to finish, scoring eight of the first nine points on four kills from sophomore Jaela Zimmerman and a pair of kills from Davis. After Xavier got within four at 15-11, Creighton pushed its lead back to nine with an ace from Erica Kostelac and a pair of kills from Ballenger for a 20-11 lead. Freshman Kiana Schmitt finished off the match with a kill as CU won its 10th consecutive match.
Creighton finished the match with 45 kills, nine aces, 2.5 blocks and 38 digs on .276 hitting. Davis led the way for the Bluejays with 14 kills on 27 swings hitting .407, and senior Brittany Witt paced the defensive with 11 digs.
Xavier got seven kills from Noah Painter, with Alyssa Overbeck and Madi Kutruff each collecting eight digs on the day. The Musketeers finished with 22 kills, five aces, six blocks and 27 digs on just .060 hitting.
Creighton will hit the road next week for 5 p.m. matches against Providence on Friday (Oct. 25) and Saturday (Oct. 26).
