15-3 Bluejays are off to best 18-match start since 2012
AVCA Top 25 Poll | NCAA Volleyball RPI
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton Volleyball team moved into the top 10 of the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll for the first time this fall in the rankings released on Monday, October 21, coming in right at No. 10. The Bluejays also moved to 16th in the third official RPI listings released by the NCAA on Monday.
Creighton has now been ranked in the top 10 of the AVCA poll 18 times in program history, including 12 straight weeks last year from Sept. 10 to Nov. 26. This week's poll makes Creighton one of just nine programs to have spent at least one week in the AVCA Top 10 in each of the last four seasons, a list that consists of BYU, Creighton, Florida, Minnesota, Nebraska, Penn State, Stanford, Texas and Wisconsin.
The Bluejays improved to 15-3 after picking up 3-0 wins last weekend vs. Butler (Friday) and Xavier (Sunday). The Bluejays are now 8-0 in BIG EAST play and have won 31 consecutive matches against teams from the league.
No. 1 Baylor (16-0), No. 5 Nebraska (15-2) and No. 9 Washington (15-3) are the lone teams to beat the Bluejays thus far and have combined for a 46-5 record.
This week marks the 47th consecutive week the Bluejays have been ranked, the nation's 10th-longest active streak. The Bluejays have now been ranked in 61 all-time polls, and every poll since Oct. 31, 2016. CU's all-time best ranking in program history is No. 7, which came in the poll released on Aug. 28, 2017.
Baylor remained in the top spot in the poll, earning 61-of-64 first place votes. Stanford, Pitt, Texas and Nebraska remain second, third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Creighton's BIG EAST rival, Marquette, moved up a spot from 12th to 11th after No. 9 BYU lost at home to previously unranked San Diego.
Despite its two lopsided victories last weekend, Creighton plummeted from the No. 10 to No. 16 spot in the RPI rankings announced by the NCAA. It's still four spots better than the RPI ranking at this time a year ago, when CU ended up with the No. 9 national seed. The three teams to beat Creighton so far are also highly-regarded in the RPI, with No. 1 Baylor, No. 5 Nebraska and No. 6 Washington all in the top-6.
Creighton is 102-25 all-time when playing as a ranked team in the AVCA poll, including a 33-11 mark on the road, where the Jays will be this weekend. The Bluejays play at Providence at 5 p.m. Central on both Friday and Saturday nights.
