Bluejay Women's Basketball Outlasts Concordia 85-83 in Double Overtime

Agnew Posts 17 Points and 19 Rebounds in the Win
Omaha, Neb. -- Powered by an outstanding effort from seniors Jaylyn Agnew (17 points and 19 rebounds) and Olivia Elger (21 points), the Creighton women's basketball team outlasted Concordia 85-83 in a double overtime during the Bluejays' home exhibition game on Tuesday, Oct. 22.
Creighton opened the game with a strong first quarter, taking an 18-10 lead as seven different Bluejays contributed. Agnew led the way with four points in the period as Creighton forced the Bulldogs into six turnovers in the first 10 minutes.
The fortunes of the two teams turned in the second quarter as Creighton committed eight turnovers and went just 2-of-14 from the field (14.3%), while Concordia found its rhythm to shoot 9-of-17 (52.9%) from the field in the frame. Concordia outscored the Bluejays 17-4 in the first six minutes to claim a 27-22 edge (3:30 remaining) and held a 35-29 lead on Creighton at the half.
Down as much as 12 points in the third quarter, 53-41 with 1:22 remaining, the Bluejays rallied behind Elger. The Illinois native connected from long range to make it 53-44 and key a 12-4 run over the four minutes. Elger scored 11 of her game-high 21 points during the stretch, hitting a trio of three-pointers and a pair of free throws to bring the Bluejays within four at 57-53 (8:08). Five minutes later the Bluejays eliminated a 63-58 deficit on a driving layup from Agnew and a three-ball from junior Tatum Rembao to knot the game at 63-63 (3:30). Down 68-63 with just 93 seconds left, the Bluejays refuse to go down as junior Temi Carda hit a pair from the charity stripe, then Rembao tied the game once more with 31 seconds left at 68-68.
Creighton surged in front in the first overtime session with a 7-2 burst. Once more Elger got the Bluejays going with a trifecta, also getting fouled on the play to convert a four-point play. The ensuing Bluejay possession saw Carda connect from downtown to put Creighton up 75-70 (3:52). The Bulldogs, however, showed the toughness the led Concordia to the Division II NAIA National Title last season by forcing a second overtime with a three-pointer from Grace Barry in the closing minute.
Carda stepped forward with the Bluejays 11th trey of the night to open the sixth period of play and Creighton did not trail in the second overtime, leading by four at 83-79 and again at 85-81.
Elger's 21 points led five Bluejays that reached double-figures. The other four to cross into double digits were Agnew (17 points), Carda (11 points), sophomore Payton Brotzki (10 points) and Rembao (10 points).
Concorndia saw four players post double-digits, getting 26 points from Barry to lead the way. Philly Lammers finished with 16 points, while Colby Duvel and Mackenzie Koepke each delivered 11 points.
Creighton opens the regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at Baxter Arena against Nebraska-Omaha, with a tip time set for 7:00 pm.
