Brittany Witt and Grace Nelson are recognized
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Volleyball's Brittany Witt and Grace Nelson have earned Academic All-District 7 distinction from the College Sports Information Directors of America. The Bluejays, along with Kansas State, are one of two schools in District 7 with a player on both the first and second team.
This is the third straight year that Creighton has had an Academic All-District First Team selection, as Lydia Dimke and Jaali Winters were honored in 2017 and Winters and Taryn Kloth were recognized in 2018. Creighton is the only school in District 7 with a First Team choice in each of the past three campaigns.
The 2019 Academic All-District® Volleyball Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program separately recognizes volleyball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA. First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in early December.
District 7 includes eight states (Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma and Texas). District 7 saw seven women named First Team selections and an additional 11 landing on the Second Team among the 91 overall nominees.
Witt leads the BIG EAST in digs per set both in league play (5.09) and all matches (5.00). The Omaha native ranks second in program history with 1,944 career digs and fourth with 111 career aces. She owns a 3.86 GPA and is an Exercise Science major.
Nelson averages 1.30 digs per set as a defensive specialist for the Bluejays. After just 17 digs in 2018 for CU, the defensive specialist already owns 104 digs this fall. The Elkhorn, Neb., native owns a 4.00 GPA in Elementary Education.
The contributions of Witt and Nelson have helped Creighton to the No. 14 national ranking this fall. Winners of 15 of its last 16 matches, the Bluejays (20-4, 13-1 BIG EAST) return to the court on Saturday at 12 p.m. Central with a match at Xavier.
