Volleyball Sweeps Xavier; Improves to 21-4

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Annika Welty returned to the floor for the first time since August to help the No. 14 Creighton Volleyball team roll to a 3-0 win at Xavier on Saturday. Scores of the match were 25-21, 25-18, 25-14.
Welty had four kills, three digs and a block in 14 swings for Creighton (21-4, 14-1 BIG EAST. The Bluejays were paced by a 10 kills and 10 digs by Jaela Zimmerman, 14 kills from Keeley Davis, 18 digs by Brittany Witt and 36 assists and nine digs from Madelyn Cole. Creighton finished with 46 kills, seven aces, 57 digs and 11 blocks on .254 hitting.
"Annika got cleared on Wednesday and she's been getting some reps in practice and I thought she did a great job making an impact," said Creighton head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth.
Xavier (10-15, 7-8 BIG EAST) managed just 22 kills in the match, with three different women sharing team-high honors with four apiece, and Madi Kutruff topped Xavier with 18 digs. The Musketeers recorded 22 kills, two aces, 45 digs and five blocks but hit just .018 in 111 swings
"Xavier runs such a fast offense it took us a little while to adjusted, but once we did I thought our blocking impacted them," said Booth. "We had good offensive parity and I would like to see us hit at a higher clip, but overall I'm pleased with the final result."
Davis started the match on fire with seven kills in the opening set to pace a Bluejay offense that had 16 kills. CU trailed 8-5 before responding with a 9-2 run to take control 14-10 after an ace from Cole. Davis had kills on three of the final four points to close out the first frame.
Extended serving runs by Witt and Zimmerman helped CU pull away in the second set for the 25-18 win. The score was knotted at 9-9 before three straight Bluejay blocks put CU in front for good.. Witt had eight digs and Zimmerman and Davis each added four kills for CU, which also had five rejections.
Creighton was aced on the first point of the third set but responded with a 4-0 run and did not trail while cruising to a 25-14 victory in the finale. Zimmerman had five kills and Cole and Ballenger each provided three blocks to limit the Musketeer offense to -.062 hitting in 32 swings.
The Bluejays return to the court on Sunday at Noon when they visit Butler.
NOTES: Madelyn Cole surpassed 1,000 career digs in the match. She had 494 digs at Marshall and now owns 510 at Creighton ... Cole also surpassed 4,000 career assists in today's win. She had 1,777 helpers at Marshall and now owns 2,228 assists with Creighton ... Creighton is now 17-0 all-time against Xavier ... Creighton has swept Xavier in nine of the past 10 meetings ... Creighton has led 2-0 at intermission in 23 of its last 24 regular-season BIG EAST matches.
