Agnew's Delivers 26 points and 13 rebounds in Win
Lincoln, Neb. -- Led by senior Jaylyn Agnew's seventh career double-double (26 points and 13 rebounds), the Creighton women's basketball team collected its fourth consecutive win over Nebraska, 79-74, on Sunday, Nov. 24th.
The win moved the Bluejays to 4-1 on the season, while Nebraska fell to 5-1 overall.
The Bluejays came out firing early as Agnew and junior Temi Carda connected from long range on each of Creighton's first three possessions. Agnew splashed home the first trey, then Carda connected from the left wing. The tandem connected on the third possession as Carda fed Agnew for her second trifecta, forcing Nebraska head coach Amy Williams to call an early timeout with the Bluejays up 9-4 (8:01).
Nebraska responded to its head coach with seven straight points to take an 11-9 edge, but Agnew answered the challenge for the Bluejays with her third three-pointer of the opening quarter to put Creighton back ahead 12-11 (4:18). The two squads went back and forth but Creighton trailed 18-17 after the first period.
The Huskers fed the post early in the second quarter, getting six points from Kate Cain to bounce out to a 26-20 edge with 3:15 remaining in the half. Seniors Olivia Elger stepped forward with a driving layup, then Agnew connected once more from long range to bring the Bluejays within a points at 26-25 (2:35). Down 31-27 moments later, Agnew delivered her fifth three-pointer of the half to make it 31-30 (1:27) and Carda delivered a bucket in paint to knot the game at 32-32 at the half.
Similar to the opening of the game, Creighton connected on a pair of three-balls to open the second half. This time it was junior Tatum Rembao and Carda connecting to put the Bluejays up 38-32 (8:25). While Nebraska pulled even at 44-44 (3:59), the Bluejays refused to yield the advantage, finding their range from beyond the arc once more. This time it was Elger coming through with consecutive triples to give Creighton a 50-44 (2:53) advantage. Despite Nebraska shooting 69% (9-of-13) in the third quarter, a three-ball from Carda in the closing seconds sent the Bluejays to the fourth with a 55-51 edge.
Just as they had done twice previously, the Bluejays came out firing in the fourth. Elger connected from long range to open the frame, then Agnew delivered a traditional three-point play to put Creighton up 61-51 (8:56). The Huskers appeared to be mounting a comeback with five straight, but Rembao drained a trey late in the shot clock to make it 64-56 (5:47). The following Bluejay possession yielded another critical bucket as Agnew with just two seconds on the shot clock Agnew caught an inbounds pass and dropped in a two-pointer to push Creighton back up by eight at 66-58 (4:08). The Bluejays went on to extend their lead to as much as 11 in the closing moments and withstood a final push from the Huskers to claim the 79-74 win.
Agnew led all players with 26 points and 13 rebounds, while Carda and Elger each finished with 18 points. Rembao also finished in double figures with 11 points. As a team the Bluejays closed the game 14-32 (44%) from beyond the arc.
Nebraska got 18 points from Cain as well as 17 points from Sam Haiby and 14 from Leigha Brown.
Creighton returns to the court on Thursday, Nov. 28th as the Bluejays face No. 25 West Virginia in the opening game for both teams at the Cancun Challenge. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30 pm (CT).
