Omaha, Neb. -- Down 33-24 with just over two minutes left in the third quarter, the Creighton women's basketball team caught fire to outscore the Shockers 32-13 and seize a 56-46 win over Wichita State on Saturday, Dec. 14th.
The win moved the Bluejays to 8-2 on the season, equaling the best start in school history, while Wichita State fell to 5-4 on the season.
Trailing 33-24 with 2:14 left in the third, senior Jaylyn Agnew and junior Tatum Rembao changed the game in an instance. Rembao found Agnew open on the wing for a three-pointer, then was fouled as Agnew let the ball fly. Agnew's shot ripped through the net, while Rembao was sent to the line. Two free throw later the Bluejays trailed just 33-29 and the momentum had swung the Bluejays way.
Wichita State tried to end the rally with a pair of free throws, but Creighton found its range as Rembao connected for another triple to send the contest to the fourth with the Shockers clinging to a 35-32 edge.
Creighton continued to bang away from beyond the arc top open the fourth as sophomore Payton Brotzki connected for a pair of treys, finally putting the Bluejays back on top at 38-37 with 8:29 left in the game. Rembao continued the Bluejay assault with back-to-back buckets, including a three-ball, then Agnew connected on her fifth shot from downtown to give the cap an 11-0 run and put the Bluejays up 46-37 (6:40).
The two teams traded free throws on the following possessions, then Rembao delivered the gut punch with the Bluejays' 12th three-pointer of the contest to push Creighton's edge to 51-40 (4:47). The Bluejays went on to lead by as much as 12 (53-41) and claimed the 10-point win.
While Creighton was lights out in the final 12+ minutes, the first 27+ minutes left something to be desired as Creighton shot just 6-of-35 (17.1%) from the field.Â
Agnew opened the game with a pair of early treys to give the Bluejays a sliver of separation at 6-2 (5:23). Creighton held the lead throughout the opening quarter, getting additional trifectas from freshman Dee Dee Pryor and sophomore Payton Brotzki to hold a 14-11 edge at the break.
Another three-pointer from Agnew early in the second quarter pushed Creighton out to a 17-13 lead (7:35), but the Bluejays' shooting touch went cold as Creighton shot just 1-of-13 from the field in the frame. The shooting woes allowed the Shockers to close the half on a 12-2 run and claim a 25-19 lead at halftime. The Bluejays' struggles from the field continued into the third quarter as Wichita State extended its lead to double-digits at 33-23 (3:43), setting the stage for Creighton's surge.
Agnew and Rembao tied for the team lead with 17 points, while Brotzki contributed 11 points off the bench, Wichita State got 14 points from Mariah McCully.
The difference in the game was the three-point line as Creighton finished the game 12-of-33 (33.3 %) from long range, while Wichita State was 0-for-13 (0.0 %).
Creighton closes out the non-conference schedule on Friday, Dec. 20th in a road contest at Arizona State at 3:00 pm (CT).
