Series with Arizona State: First Meeting
Creighton and Arizona State play for the first time on Friday, Dec. 20th.
About Arizona State
Scouting Arizona State (9-2)
Entering the matchup with Creighton on a five-game winning streak, the Sun Devils defeated New Mexico (84-47) on Saturday, then bested New Mexico State in a road game on Wednesday (70-47).
Arizona State will test the Bluejays' ability to score the ball as the Sun Devils have limited nine of their 11 opponents to 60 points or less this season. Part of that defense is Arizona State's ability to force turnovers. Coming into Friday's game with the Bluejays, the Sun Devils are forcing 19.1 turnovers per game.
Offensively the Sun Devils are a balanced team that features 10 players that average 5.5 points or more per game. The two leaders are Ja'Tavia Tapley (12.6 ppg and 8.2 rpg) as well as Reili Richardson (8.1 ppg and 31 assists).
Scouting Creighton (8-2)
Off to the best start under Jim Flanery, the Bluejays have found multiple ways to win this season. Whether its a huge scoring night from senior Jaylyn Agnew (West Virginia and Nebraska), a 12-0 run to close the game (Northern Iowa), a stingy defense that limited Wichita State to just 23.6 percent from the field, a 20+ point effort from junior Tatum Rembao (North Dakota State) or a team defensive effort (South Dakota State), the Bluejays have done it all to claim the win.
Senior Jaylyn Agnew has been the constant for Creighton this season, averaging 18.5 ppg, while junior point guard Tatum Rembao (11.0 ppg) is the unsung driving force for the squad. Rembao leads the Bluejays with 32 assists and can penetrate to dictate the pace of play. Another player that has emerged for the Bluejays over the two wins versus Northern Iowa and Wichita State was sophomore Rachael Saunders. The Iowa native has 11 and 13 rebounds respectively in Creighton's last two games. The Bluejays have turned to their defense early on this season forcing teams into 14.1 turnovers per game and limiting seven of 10 opponents to 63 points or less. Creighton is 6-1 in those battles.
Bluejay Basketball Plays Doubleheader Against Arizona State
Friday's women's basketball game between the Bluejays and Sun Devils begins a unique matchup. Not only is Friday the first game between the two programs, but Creighton's men's basketball team faces Arizona State on Saturday at 7:30 pm (CT).
Historic Defensive Performance Against the Shockers
Creighton's 56-46 win over Wichita State was undoubtedly won on the defensive end as the Bluejays limited the Shockers to just 23.6 percent from the field (13-of-55). The last time Creighton held an opponent to a lower shooting percentage came in consecutive games during the 2009-10 season. On Feb 13, 2010 the Bluejays held Evansville to just 22.7 % from the field (15-of-66), while two days earlier Creighton limited Southern Illinois to 21.7% (13-of-60). The Bluejays won both games, downing Evansville 42-41 and besting Southern Illinois, 63-41.
Wait For It.....
In the midst a of 15-minute drought from the field (2Q-7:35 to 3Q-2:14), the Bluejays closed their battle with Wichita State on a 32-13 run over the final 12:14 to claim a 56-46 win over the Shockers on Dec. 14th. During the final run the Bluejays went 10-of-17 (59%) from the field, including a half dozen from beyond the arc. Â
