Omaha, Neb. -- Down from the start the Creighton women's basketball team did not lead in a 51-45 loss to St. John's on Friday, Feb. 8.
The loss dropped Creighton to 10-13 on the season and 4-8 in BIG EAST action, while St. John's moved to 11-12 overall and 4-8 in conference play.
The Red Storm jumped out to an early 10-3 edge in the opening three minutes, forcing Creighton into three turnovers in Creighton's first four possessions. The Bluejays fought back the rest of the quarter, closing the frame on a 7-2 run to trail 12-10 after one.
Creighton puled even in the opening moments of the second period on a pair of free throws from senior Audrey Faber. St. John's responded with seven straight to lead
19-12 (5:58), yet the Bluejays refused to go down without a fight. Faber started the Bluejays on the comeback trail once more with a jumper just outside the paint, then sophomores Tatum Rembao and Temi Carda followed with layup to get Creighton within a point at 19-18. St. John's countered with a pair of buckets, but a three from freshman Payton Brotzki sent the two teams to the locker room with St. John's holding a 25-21 edge at half.
Junior Jaylyn Agnew dropped in a layup to open the second half, but the Red Storm delivered a gut punch with a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to surge ahead 38-26 (5:58). Creighton clawed its way back throughout the next 10 minutes, cutting the deficit to 42-37 with just under six minutes remaining in the game. The Bluejays, however, were unable to get any closer than five.
Faber extended her double-digit streak with a team-high 14 points, while St. John's got a game-high 15 from Curteeona Brelove and 11 points from Akina Wellere.
The Bluejays return to the hardwood on Sunday, Feb. 10 as Creighton battles Seton Hall at 1:00 pm in a game that will be broadcast nationally on Fox Sports 2.
