Creighton trio recognized by BIG EAST coaches
NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Three players from the Creighton men's basketball team have been honored by the BIG EAST in a vote of league basketball coaches.
Ty-Shon Alexander and Martin Krampelj were named Honorable Mention All-BIG EAST, and Marcus Zegarowski was a unanimous selection to the league's All-Freshman Team. It's the first postseason league honor for all three men.
Alexander leads Creighton with 16.1 points per game, well above the 5.5 points per contest he scored a year ago. The sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., set a school-record by making a three-pointer in 33 straight games, and ranks fourth in the BIG EAST by making 2.97 three-pointers per contest. Alexander also ranks among the top-12 in the conference in points per game (16.1) and free throw percentage (.798), and he topped the club with 27 steals in league action.
Krampelj is one of the league's premier big men, averaging 13.6 points and 6.9 rebounds per contest. He shots 59.3 percent from the floor, and also tops CU with 25 blocked shots. The Grosuplje, Slovenia, product was at his best in league action, ranking among the top-10 in points (16.7), rebounds (8.2), blocks (0.94) and steals (1.44) per game. Krampelj owns seven double-doubles this winter, and ranks among the national leaders with 69 dunks.
Zegarowski earned All-Freshman Team acclaim after averaging 10.5 points, 3.3 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game. Among all players, he currently ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in three-point percentage (.425) and assist/turnover ratio (1.86), and third among all league freshmen in scoring (10.5 ppg.). The Hamilton, Mass., native started 12 games, and Creighton is 18-10 in his 28 appearances compared to an 0-3 mark in the three games he missed due to injury. Zegarowski's recognition marks the third straight season the Bluejays have had a player named to the All-Freshman Team, as Mitch Ballock earned similar plaudits a year ago and Justin Patton was named Freshman of the Year in 2017.
The BIG EAST Player of the Year will come from the All-BIG EAST First Team. The conference will announce Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, Freshman of the Year and the BIG EAST Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Wednesday, March 13. The press conference will be held on the first day of the BIG EAST Tournament Presented by Jeep at Madison Square Garden at 3:30 p.m. Central.
