Sophomore guard leads Creighton in scoring
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton guard Ty-Shon Alexander has been selected as an All-District VI selection by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. District VI consists of schools from the seven state region of Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota.
This year marks the third straight season Creighton has had a player honored, as Marcus Foster was recognized in both 2016-17 and 2017-18. Foster was CU's first honoree by the USBWA since Doug McDermott won the Oscar Robertson Trophy as the USBWA National Player of the Year in 2013-14. McDermott was a three-time All-District selection and two-time District Player of the Year.
Alexander leads Creighton with 16.1 points per game, well above the 5.5 points per contest he scored a year ago. The sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., set a school-record by making a three-pointer in 33 straight games, and ranks fourth in the BIG EAST by making 2.97 three-pointers per contest. Alexander also ranks among the top-12 in the conference in points per game (16.1) and free throw percentage (.798), and he topped the club with 27 steals in league action. On Sunday Alexander was named Honorable Mention All-BIG EAST for the first time in his career.
Dedric Lawson (Kansas) was named District VI Player of the Year, while Bruce Weber (Kansas State) claimed District VI Coach of the Year accolades.
Creighton (18-13) returns to action on Thursday at 1:30 pm Central when it plays a quarterfinal round game vs. Xavier at the BIG EAST Tournament, presented by Jeep, in New York City.
