OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton men's tennis freshman Nick Campbell earned BIG EAST Tennis Male Athlete of the Week honors, the league announced on Tuesday.Â
Campbell helped the Bluejays finish their spring break trip to Florida with a 2-1 record while individually going 3-0 at the No. 1 singles position and 3-0 at No. 1 doubles.
The freshman dropped only one set during three singles matches. Campbell opened the week with a 6-3, 6-2 win against the top singles player from Youngstown State. On Wednesday he outlasted his opponent from Saint Joseph's with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 victory. Finally, Campbell defeated Xavier's Brett Winters in straight-sets (7-6, 6-4) and contributed to the Bluejays' 6-1 win against the Musketeers on Thursday.
During doubles play, Campbell teamed with Mac Mease for three victories at the top doubles position as Creighton earned the doubles point during each match. The duo's 6-4 win against Youngstown State clinched the doubles point to start the week, and a 6-3 victory against Xavier's top pair secured the doubles point during the Bluejays' final match of the week.
Campbell, a native of Cyprus, is 8-4 with five consecutive wins at the top singles position this season and 7-3 in doubles play, including 4-0 with Mease in the No. 1 slot during the past four matches
Creighton returns to the courts March 26 in Kansas City, Missouri for a contest against UMKC.Â
