Creighton honors Ruth Scott and Sharon Hanson
OMAHA, Neb. -- Ruth Scott and Sharon Hanson were among those recognized earlier today by Creighton Athletics at the 14th Annual Leaders for Life Luncheon held at D.J. Sokol Arena inside the Wayne and Eileen Ryan Athletic Center.
The Leaders for Life Luncheon is an annual fundraising event that celebrates Creighton's female student-athletes, and allows those student-athletes the opportunity to thank the supporters of women's athletics who make it possible to compete in the BIG EAST and at the NCAA Division I level. All Leaders for Life gifts support female student-athletes, including Leaders for Life scholarship funds and leadership development programs that ensure we can educate, develop and graduate outstanding female student-athletes . Additionally, this Luncheon provides Creighton Athletics an occasion to honor two influential supporters of women's athletics for their continued leadership and advancement at Creighton and among the community. More than $175,000 was raised at this year's event, bringing the total raised over the years to over $1 million.
Ruth Scott was chosen to receive the Believe and Achieve Award. Scott is deeply invested in the future of our community and began her career impacting students as a teacher in Omaha. She and her husband, Bill, have been tremendous benefactors to Creighton Athletics, especially its women's athletics programs. Their generosity has benefited several key Athletics projects, including the new Ruth Scott Training Center, the Jensen Family Lounge, and the Rasmussen Center.
Sharon Hanson was recognized with the Leaders for Life Award. Hanson was at Creighton from 2004-2009 as an associate athletic director and senior woman administrator and was instrumental in building the Leaders for Life program. During her tenure, she assisted in the fundraising for the D.J. Sokol Arena and Wayne and Eileen Ryan Athletic Center. She is in both the Iowa Girls Coaches Hall of Fame and the Iowa Girls Basketball Player Hall of Fame, and she and her husband, Bob, were named national girls high school coaches of the year in 2003.
Women's tennis sophomore Erin Epperson received the Dr. Melissa Kean Endowed Scholarship, and junior Haylee Blach of the women's soccer team received the Leaders for Life Endowed Scholarship. Both awards are for the 2019-20 academic year.
