Project started on July 22 and is expected to be completed on Aug. 4
OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton men's and women's soccer teams will be competing on a new playing surface this fall. The process to remove the current surface and install FieldTurf CORE at Morrison Stadium started on Monday, July 22 and is expected to be completed by Aug. 4, prior to the start of the men's and women's soccer competition seasons.
"We are very excited to see this upgrade to Morrison Stadium for the upcoming season," Creighton Director of Athletic Facilities Brandon McCarville said. "It is our goal to provide the highest quality playing surface for our student-athletes and we feel that FieldTurf's CORE product will meet or even exceed that goal."
The Creighton women's soccer Blue-White scrimmage is scheduled for Aug. 9 at 6 p.m. at Morrison Stadium, while the Bluejay men open their home schedule with an exhibition match on Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. against Missouri State.
CORE is "the first multi-layer dual-polymer fiber ever," and "rewrites the playbook for sports turf, reinvents the playing field, and redefines the player experience," according to FieldTurf.
The FieldTurf CORE sports turf is a FIFA Quality Pro certified surface and is currently featured at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, the home facility of the MLS Atlanta United FC and NFL Atlanta Falcons and at Providence Park in Portland, the home facility of the MLS Portland Timbers and NWSL Portland Thorns.
"As a player you always want to train and play on the best surface possible, and this upgrade allows just that," Creighton women's soccer head coach Ross Paule said. "A few professional teams have gone to this surface and love how it plays and the consistency it provides."
The new turf package also includes VersaTile, which features a state of the arc drainage system and shock absorption. The drainage system offers a free draining surface area of 82 percent and the shock absorption properties are expected to lessen the impact of the normal wear and tear of soccer. VersaTile is partially made from recycled turf.
"I'm confident we have one of the best college soccer specific stadiums in the country, if not the best. The upgrade is exciting for the progress of our soccer programs at Creighton," Paule said.
Additionally, FieldTurf's CoolPlay system will be installed to complete the playing surface. The CoolPlay composite dressing has been tested to keep the playing surface about 35 degrees cooler than traditional sand or rubber infill systems.
"Anytime you can upgrade facilities, it's a positive," Creighton men's soccer head coach Johnny Torres said. "In regards to Morrison Stadium -- which is already one of the best college soccer venues in the country -- being able to replace the current surface with FieldTurf CORE now makes it the best college soccer venue in the country.
"It's an exciting time for our players and for our community."
