Danielle Hotalling wins the first meet of her sophomore season
OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton men's and women's cross country teams kicked off their 2019 seasons with a dual meet against Drake at the Skutt Catholic Athletic Complex on Saturday. It marked the first home meet for the Bluejay program since the 2012 season.
The Bluejay women team took home the team title scoring 23 points, while Drake scored 32 points as a team. It was CU's first meet victory since the Briar Cliff Invitational on Oct. 10, 2015, and the first meet win against exclusively Division I programs since taking home the crown at the Woody Greeno Invitational on Sept. 19, 2015.
Creighton sophomore Danielle Hotalling took home the individual title, completing the 4,000-meter course in 14:03.96. It's the seventh time in as many meets as a Bluejay that she's been the team's top finisher, and her victory made her the first Creighton player to win any competition since Emily Martin won the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational on Sept. 29, 2017.
Right behind Hotalling in second place was freshman Jordan Harmon, who finished her collegiate debut in 14:12.57. Sophomore Marguerite Hendrickson was the next Bluejay to cross the line in fourth place with a time of 14:21.36. After Hendrickson was Caroline Pass finishing in sixth in a time of 14:37.02. In 10th was senior Haley Fye crossing the line in 14:48.25, with Ashley Riley coming in right after with a time of 14:51.94. Katie Fukushima clocked in with a time of 15:04.49 to secure 13th. Freshman Katie Cox finished in a time of 15:19.83 to come in 14th before junior Amy Leasure rounded out the Bluejay contingent in 16th place with a time of 15:44.93.
On the men's side of things, the Bluejays finished with a team score of 37, but fell just short as Drake scored 22 points as a team.
Pacing the Bluejays was sophomore John Quigley with a third-place finish in his Bluejay debut, finishing the 6,000-meter race in a time of 18:58.95. Finishing in fifth place was Danny Bohnemann, who crossed the finish line in 19:03.37. After Bohnemann was Nick Monkemeyer in 10th place in a time of 19:28.05. Right after Monkemeyer was sophomore Boston Small finishing in a time of 19:31.80.
Following Small was Michael Buckley coming in 15th with a time of 19:36.70. Coming in with a time of 20:03.21 was Micah Navarro in 16th. Rounding out the Creighton runners was Aidan King crossing the line in 20:11.29.
Chase Howard won the meet with a time of 18:40.40, but the Creighton senior is redshirting and officially competed "unattached" in the meet. Drake's Matt Cozine turned in a time of 18:56.78 to place first among scoring competitors in the meet.
"It was great to have a home meet, I appreciate Drake coming over. Both teams got after it, and ran well today. A win for the girls was a great way to start off the season. We're running a lot of young kids, and have some guys sitting out. We need those younger guys to step up but they competed well today with it being their first college meet. It's not where we want to be, yet but it's a great start to the season and I like where we are headed.," said Creighton head coach Chris Gannon.
The men's and women's teams will compete again on September. 20th in South Bend, Ind. at the National Catholic Invitational hosted by Notre Dame.
