Senior Taryn Jakubowski Tallies Two Goals in the Win
Omaha, Neb. -- Behind a pair of goals from senior Taryn Jakubowski as well a goal and two assists from freshman Skylar Heinrich, the Creighton women's soccer team posted its most impressive win of the season 3-1 over Oklahoma (RV) on Sunday, Sept. 15.
The win moved the Bluejays to 5-1-0 on the season, while the Sooners fell to 4-2-2.
Creighton took an early 1-0 lead in the 17th minute, taking advantage of its first shot of the contest. Sophomore Ansley Atkinson dribbled a ball from the left then threaded a ball into the center of the box for Heinrich to finish the one-on-one chance from 12 yards out.
The Bluejays pushed their lead to 2-0 in the 25th minute as Heinrich set up Jakubowski, hitting the senior on a run through the middle. The Illinois native took the pass just outside the goal box, beating three defenders to put away her second goal of the season.
Oklahoma had a golden opportunity in the 29th minute, drawing a penalty in the box against Bluejay freshman Jordy Rothwell. The penalty kick was taken by the Sooners' leading scorer, Kaylee Dao, but Creighton goalkeeper Katie Sullivan blocked the shot. The ball went off Sullivan's hands softly into the right post, before the Bluejay netminder smothered the ball.
Creighton took the 2-0 advantage into the locker room and the Bluejays appeared to push their edge to 3-0 early in the second half as Heinrich was called offside on an apparent goal in the 57th minute.
Oklahoma took advantage with a goal moments later, scoring on a set piece after a Creighton foul. Kristina O'Donnell bounced the ball into the net in the 62nd minute, taking a pass from Caroline Berutti. The play was set in motion by Megan Reilly, who also earned an assist, as she sent the ball to the left where Berutti one-touched a lofted pass into the middle of the box.
The Sooners pushed throughout the rest of the second half, firing away with 12 shots in the period, but Creighton refused to be denied. In the 85th minute the Bluejays put the match away as Heinrich centered a pass just inside the box. Jakubowski came rushing on to strike the ball in for her second goal of the match.
Oklahoma out shot Creighton 17-9 in the match, while the Sooners held a 6-4 edge on corners.
After opening 2019 with six consecutive home matches, the Bluejays hit the road for three contests next week, beginning Tuesday at Kansas City. The match is set to begin at 7:00 pm.
