#15 Volleyball Dominates Wichita State in 3-0 Sweep

Jays post first home sweep over WSU since 2001
Omaha, Neb. -- The No. 15 Creighton women's volleyball team picked up its first home sweep of former Missouri Valley Conference rival Wichita State since 2001, breezing by the Shockers 3-0 on Thursday, Sept. 19 in the opening match of the Creighton Classic.
Set scores for the match were 25-15, 25-17 and 25-19.
With the win the Bluejays moved to 6-3 on the season, while Wichita State dropped to 3-7 overall.
Down 7-5 early in the opening set, the Bluejays found their rhythm in a big way as Creighton delivered a knockdown punch courtesy of a 9-1 run. Leading the Bluejay surge was freshman Keeley Davis, who delivered a pair of kills and a service ace during the span to push Creighton out to a 14-8 edge. Creighton went on to stretch its advantage to double digits to take the set 25-15. Five different Bluejays had multiple kills in the frame, and Brittany Witt had seven digs to lead CU.
A back-and-forth start to the second set saw Wichita State hold a 5-4 lead only to watch the Bluejays roll off 10 of the next 13 points to take control 14-8. This Creighton run was powered by a trio of kills from sophomore Jaela Zimmerman. She finished with six of Creighton's 14 kills in the set as the Bluejays hit .407 with 14 kills in 27 swings during the set. Wichita State hit -.040 in the second frame as Creighton collected four of its season-high 11 blocks.
Creighton never trailed in the third set, racing to leads of 4-0, 7-1 and 10-2 in the 25-19 clincher. Davis had five kills and Megan Ballenger had a hand in four blocks to limit the Shocker offense to .000 hitting in 33 swings.
Davis, the two-time reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, had a match-best 12 kills and hit .409 in 22 swings. Zimmerman added 11 kills on .357 hitting. Witt led the defense with nine digs and Ballenger notched a season-best eight blocks. Madelyn Cole directed the CU offense to .276 hitting, setting up 35 assists and adding six digs and five blocks. CU finished with 44 kills, two aces, 39 digs and 11 blocks.
Wichita State was led by seven kills from Brylee Kelly, and Kara Bown dug a match-high 11 balls. The Shockers hit .011 with 24 kills, one ace, 41 digs and nine blocks. The Shockers used three different setters to try to jump-start their offense on the night.
Creighton returns to the floor on Saturday, Sept. 21 to face Wyoming at 1 p.m., needing a victory to clinch the tournament title for Creighton. Wyoming and Wichita State battle tomorrow in the second contest of the tournament at 2:00 p.m., with free admission to all at D.J. Sokol Arena.
