Omaha, Neb. -- Powered by ten treys in the opening half as well as a 9-0 run to start the game, the Creighton women's basketball team defeated Nebraska 78-62 on Monday, Dec. 14.
Monday's triumph was the Bluejays fifth straight win over intrastate rival Nebraska, lifting Creighton to 2-3 on the season. Nebraska, meanwhile, suffered its first loss to fall to 3-1 on the year.
Sophomore Carly Bachelor and junior Rachael Saunders got the Bluejays off to a fast start with an interior bucket from Bachelor, then a five straight by Saunders on a three-ball and a driving layup to take a 7-0 edge (8:18) and force Nebraska head coach Amy Williams into an early timeout.
Following the stoppage the Bluejays' defense continued to frustrate Nebraska, forcing the Huskers into four missed field goals and three turnovers in the opening five minutes of the game. Senior Temi Carda capitalized on the final Husker misfire with a driving layup to push Creighton's lead to 9-0 (5:48). Following Nebraska's first bucket of the game, Saunders connected once more from long range to give Creighton a 12-2 lead with 5:11 remaining.

Creighton caught first from long range in the second quarter, starting with Bachelor from the left corner to open the second to make it 22-13. Moments later with a 28-18 lead (5:29), the Bluejays took control with a 9-0 run on trifectas from Carda sandwiched around another from freshman Morgan Maly. The result was a 37-18 Creighton lead with 3:03 on the clock. Another trey from Carda with under a minute remaining gave the Bluejays a 42-20 edge, as Creighton held a 42-21 lead at the break.
