Top 10 Battle On Tap As #8 Men's Basketball Climbs in AP Poll
12/7/2020 11:05:00 AM | Men's Basketball
Bluejays are ranked for 10th straight week
OMAHA, Neb. --Â The Creighton men's basketball team is ranked eighth in the country in the Associated Press poll released on Monday, December 7th. The No. 8 ranking is one spot shy of the best mark in program history, which was previously done on Jan. 16, 2017, March 9, 2020 and March 16, 2020.
CU's ascension sets up a top-10 battle in Lawrence, Kan., on Tuesday at 4 p.m. when the Bluejays visit No. 5 Kansas (4-1). It's just the second time in program history that both Creighton and its opponent have been ranked in the top-10, joining a Dec. 31, 2016 game between No. 1 Villanova and No. 10 Creighton. CU has won five of its last six games against top-10 competition, including the last four.
The Bluejays moved up after lopsided wins vs. Nebraska-Omaha (94-67) and Kennesaw State (93-58) last week. The Bluejays led by 24 and 27 points, respectively, at halftime of those victories.
Creighton is one of 10 schools that have been ranked each of the past 10 polls (since Feb. 3, 2020), joining Baylor, Duke, Florida State, Gonzaga, Houston, Iowa, Kansas, Tennessee and Villanova.
Creighton (3-0) has now been ranked 99 times in program history, with 71 of those under the direction of Greg McDermott. Creighton is 123-46 all-time as a ranked team, including an 89-34 mark under McDermott. Creighton has been ranked at least one week in eight of McDermott's 11 seasons on The Hilltop after doing it just five different seasons in program history before his 2010 arrival.
In addition, this is the 15th time that Creighton has earned a top-10 ranking in program history. Fourteen of those weeks have come under McDermott's leadership.
CU is one of two BIG EAST teams that are nationally ranked by the AP this week, joining No. 9 Villanova. Other BIG EAST teams that are receiving votes include Xavier, Connecticut and Marquette.
The USA Today/Coaches poll, which had Creighton 11th in the preseason, moved the Bluejays up four spots to No. 7. That ties the program's best ranking in the coaches poll ever. It was first done January 16, 2017.
In addition to No. 5 Kansas, Creighton will also host unranked Nebraska this Friday at 6 p.m. on BTN.
