Greg McDermott named District Coach of the Year; Alexander & Zegarowski also recognized
OMAHA, Neb. -- The National Association of Basketball Coaches honored three individuals associated with the Creighton Basketball program as it handed out All-District honors on Monday, March 23rd. Greg McDermott was named NABC District 5 Coach of the Year, with Ty-Shon Alexander (First Team) and Marcus Zegarowski (Second Team) earning All-District honors for their play on the hardwood.
McDermott led a Creighton team that was picked to finish seventh in the BIG EAST Conference to the No. 7 national ranking, a 24-7 overall record, and a share of its first BIG EAST Conference title. Under his guidance, McDermott's team beat a school-record six top-25 teams, including three top-10 wins, which helped him bring home BIG EAST Coach of the Year honors. Creighton also set a school-record for single-season home attendance (311,651) and matched its best ranking (No. 7) in program history. McDermott was named one of 10 semifinalists nationally for the 2020 Werner Ladder Naismith Coach of the Year and earlier in the month he became Creighton's first USBWA District Coach of the Year since Dana Altman in 2002-03. After 10 years on The Hilltop McDermott owns a record of 231-116 with the Bluejays to up his career record to 511-311 in 26 seasons as a head coach. The NABC District Coach of the Year honor is the second such recognition of McDermott's career, joining the honor he picked up in 2012-13 when Creighton was in District 16.
Alexander led Creighton and ranked third in the BIG EAST with 16.9 points per game while also adding 5.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and a team-high 1.3 steals per game. The junior from Charlotte, N.C., was second in the BIG EAST in free throw percentage (.860), fourth in three-pointers per game (2.61), fifth in minutes per game (34.7), sixth in three-point percentage (.399) and eighth in steals per contest (1.3). He is one of two players in Creighton history with 80 or more three-pointers in consecutive seasons and one of 10 men in the Bluejay record book with multiple seasons of 500 points or more. The award is one of several for Alexander this month, who was also named First Team All-BIG EAST and First Team All-District by the USBWA.
Zegarowski was named Second Team All-District by the NABC, just as he was also named Second Team All-BIG EAST. His awards haul this month already includes Second Team All-America acclaim from NBC Sports. Third Team All-America recognition by Stadium and Honorable Mention All-America accolades by the Associated Press. A Hamilton, Mass., native, Zegarowski averaged 16.1 points, 5.1 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game. Zegarowski played his best in some of CU's biggest games, averaging 18.9 points per game while shooting 60.4 percent from the field and 51.4 percent from three-point range in eight games against top-25 foes. Zegarowski ranked third in the BIG EAST in assists per game (5.1), third in three-point percentage (.424), fifth in assist/turnover ratio (1.95), sixth in three-pointers made per game (2.42), sixth in points per game (16.1), sixth in minutes per game (34.6) and 11th in field goal percentage (.488).
Rounding out the rest of the NABC District 5 First Team alongside Alexander were Markus Howard (Marquette), Myles Powell (Seton Hall), Saddiq Bey (Villanova) and Kamar Baldwin (Butler). The Second Team All-District 5 consisted of Zegarowski, Paul Reed (DePaul), Tyrique Jones (Xavier), Romaro Gill (Seton Hall) and Collin Gillespie (Villanova).
Creighton finished the season 24-7 and earned a share of its first BIG EAST regular-season title on March 7 in win vs. No. 8 Seton Hall.
