A look back at 2019-20
The 2019-20 season for the Creighton women's golf team was off to a strong start before the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic abruptly halted the season in mid-March and forced the cancellation of the final three meets of the spring. The 2019-20 campaign saw the Bluejays win the Creighton Classic, claim an individual title (Katie Allen at the Loyola Fall Invitational), included record-setting season from freshman Gabby Tremblay and featured Allen firing a hole-in-one (Feb. 10).
Creighton's season stroke average of 313.12 was five shots better than any of the past 16 seasons, and its 296 team score in the second round of the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial on September 9 matched the team's best round in that same span.
Tremblay placed 27th in the first meet of her collegiate career, then reeled off five consecutive top-15 finishes to close her rookie season. Her 77.29 scoring average trimmed 0.41 strokes off the previous best mark set by Allen one year earlier. All but two of the freshman's 17 rounds wrapped in the 70s, and she finished as one of CU's top three performers in all six meets.
Allen followed up her phenomenal freshman season with another strong year. She became CU's first player with multiple rounds of par or better in the same season, and her 71 in the second round of her fall ranks tied for CU's second-best round on the books. Allen won the 53-person Loyola Fall Invitational in mid-September, becoming CU's first medalist since Leigh Sutton won the 8th Annual Springlake Classic in 2005. Allen fired a hole-in-one on Feb. 10th in match play competition against IUPUI, and her 77.80 career scoring average ranks as the best mark of any Bluejay with 30 or more rounds since 2003 by more than two shots.
Margaret Hickey wrapped up a strong junior season with a 79.05 scoring average, which included a pair of top-10 finishes to start the season. Hickey's 221 at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial tied for the second-best 54-hole score at CU. Her 80.55 career average ranks fourth-best in program history, trailing only Allen (77.80), Sarah Eversman (80.01) and Amelia Lee (80.47). Lee's third year at CU saw her finish as one of four Blueajys to average 80 or less, coming in at 79.93.
Lee's fifth place finish at the Creighton Classic helped the Bluejays to the program's first title in recent memory. She was joined in the top-10 at that meet by teammates Allen (2nd), Tremblay (6th) and Claire Orcutt (8th).
Creighton also finished second at the Motor City Cup, an eight-team match play competition held in February to open the spring.
