OMAHA, Neb. -- Five Creighton programs were recognized with Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for having multi-year Academic Performance Rate (APR) scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. Creighton's volleyball, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's golf and women's tennis teams earned the APR Public Recognition Award in the NCAA's latest rankings released earlier this week.
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams and measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term, providing a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. Largely as a result of an increase in perfect scores, teams earning Public Recognition Awards increased to 1,380, up by 52 from the previous academic year. APRs for programs in the top 10% ranged from 987 to a perfect 1,000. The number of teams posting perfect scores increased to 1,266, an increase of 52 teams from last year. Of the teams recognized, 449 competed in men's or mixed sports, and 881 competed in women's sports.
This is the ninth straight honor for Creighton women's tennis, seventh straight for women's basketball and the fifth in a row for women's cross country. Each of those teams have been recognized 11 times overall. The women's golf team was honored for the eighth time, and fourth straight year. CU's volleyball program was recognized for the eighth time overall, but first occasion since 2013-14. Creighton has had 76 teams honored all-time since teh inception of the awards in 2004-05.
"The number of teams earning Public Recognition Awards — including those earning perfect scores — has increased again, demonstrating the commitment member schools and college athletes have made to high academic achievement," NCAA President Mark Emmert said. "Congratulations to these teams for their continued academic success."
Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement, known as APR. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years. The BIG EAST Conference ranked third with 39 percent of its teams earning Public Recognition Awards.
Creighton's student-athletes owned a 3.42 cumulative GPA following the end of the 2018-19 academic year.
