Duo will compete for Bluejays Immediately
Omaha, Neb. -- Creighton head baseball coach Ed Servais announced the signing of Ryan Cowdrey (Phoenix, Ariz. - University of San Francisco) and Matthew Farman (Reno, Nev. - Boise State) for the 2021 season. Cowdrey was a walk-on at San Francisco and is thus immediately eligible, while Boise State ended its baseball program this summer making Farman eligible.
Over two seasons, Cowdrey made 10 appearances out of the bullpen over two seasons with the Dons, including four flawless outings this season. In eight combined innings, 3.2 during the 2020 season, Cowdrey posted 11 strikeouts. During the shortened 2020 campaign, he held the opposition to just one hit, facing 17 batters. A redshirt sophomore as a Bluejay in 2021, Cowdrey was a two-sport athlete in football and baseball at Saguaro High School in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was ranked among Perfect Game's top-500 recruits in the country, considered the No. 5 left-handed pitcher in Arizona in 2018. A four-year member of the varsity pitching staff for the Sabercats, Cowdrey tossed over 115 innings and collecting nine victories while totaling 118 strikeouts.
Farman redshirted the 2019 season as Boise State began to structure its return to the diamond. During the 2020 season he appeared in five games, making four starts at shortstop. The Nevada native hit .412 (7-for-17) with six RBI, a .706 slugging percentage and a .545 on-base percentage. Farman collected two letters in baseball at McQeen HS in Reno, Nev., where he also ran track and played soccer. Farman hit .615 as a senior and was a 2018 Preseason All-American West Region honorable mention pick as well as earning 2017 Preseason Underclassmen All-American honorable mention by Perfect Game.
"It's nice to have two players that have Division I playing experience. You hope that will allow for a shorter learning curve as they adjust to the way we do things at Creighton," said Servais. "Cowdrey is a left-handed pitcher, which was an area of need for us last year. Farman also gives us a left-handed bat, which is necessary to balance out our lineup."
With the additions of Cowdrey and Farman, Creighton added 13 players for the 2021 season.
