A 2-0 week keeps Creighton in the top-10 of the polls
OMAHA, Neb. --Â A pair of double-digit BIG EAST wins wasn't enough to maintain Creighton's place in the national rankings released on Monday, Jan. 11th. The Bluejays dropped one spot to No. 8 in the Associated Press poll following a week where the nation's top-11 teams went a combined 18-0. CU also dropped a spot in the Ferris Mowers Coaches poll to sixth.
The No. 8 mark is one spot shy of Creighton's best AP ranking in school history. The Bluejays had previously been ranked seventh on Jan. 16, 2017, March 9, 2020, March 16, 2020 and Jan. 4, 2021.
This is the 18th time that Creighton has earned a top-10 ranking in program history, with all but one of those weeks during Greg McDermott's tenure.
Creighton (10-2, 6-1 BIG EAST) remains one of nine schools that have been ranked each of the past 15 AP polls (since Feb. 3, 2020), joining Baylor, Duke, Gonzaga, Houston, Iowa, Kansas, Tennessee and Villanova.
It's the 104th week in program history that the Bluejays have been ranked, with 76 of those under the direction of McDermott. Creighton is 130-48 all-time as a ranked team, including a 96-36 mark under McDermott. Creighton has been ranked at least one week in eight of McDermott's 11 seasons on The Hilltop after doing it just five different seasons in program history before his 2010 arrival.
CU is one of three BIG EAST teams that are nationally ranked by the AP this week, joining No. 3 Villanova and No. 25 Connecticut. Xavier also received votes.
In the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll, Creighton also dropped a spot into the No. 6 position. That's the second-best mark in program history, one spot behind last week's No. 5 ranking. Villanova is third in this week's coaches poll. UConn and Xavier are receiving votes.
Creighton has just one game this week, a 3 p.m. Central contest at Butler on Saturday. That game can be heard on 1620 The Zone and viewed on FS1.
