Villanova, Pa. -- A Villanova goal in the 86th minute was the undoing for the Creighton women's soccer team on Sunday, October 10th as the Bluejays fell to the Wildcats 2-1.
The loss dropped Creighton to 6-6-2 on the season and 0-4-1 in BIG EAST play, while Villanova climbed to 7-7-0 overall and 1-5-0 in conference action.
The Bluejays captured an early lead in the sixth minute (5:38) as forward Maddie Radke converted her first goal of the season. The goal came on a set play, beginning with a corner. Aida Kardovic fielded the entry pass, heading it to sophomore Abigail Santana. The Bluejays point leader shifted the ball to the right for a goal from Radke.
Villanova responded with an unassisted goal by Chloe O'Neil in the 19th minute (18:23), then Brice McInroy delivered the game winner (85:11) on a pass from Maddie Fried.
Creighton created seven corners in the match to just one by Villanova, while the Wildcats held a 15-11 edge on shots.
"A great effort today and quality performance from a team that is battling some serious adversity. We played well, had the run of play, created great chances to win, showed energy and battled to the last minute. We deserved more but fell short," said head coach Ross Paule. "We walked off the field very disappointed but ready to move forward together. I can't say enough about these young women, their desire to give all they have no matter what they are faced with and for me their character is winning, it shows daily. I am proud of my team, this is a team you want to be a part of and team I love coaching and a team I believe in."
Creighton returns to the pitch on Thursday, October 14th as the Bluejays face off with Connecticut in a road match set to kick off at 6:00 pm.
