Diego Gutierrez led the Bluejays with two goals and one assist
VILLANOVA, Pa. --Â Senior Diego Gutierrez scored two goals and added one assist as the Creighton men's soccer team scored four goals in the second half to record a 4-2 win against Villanova on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bluejays posted their first points during BIG EAST play (1-4-0, 3 points) and improved to 4-6-1 overall, while the Wildcats fell to 4-2-0 (12 points) in league action and 8-4-0 overall.
Wednesday marked the first time Creighton scored four goals in a single half since Oct. 10, 2017 against Drake when the Bluejays had four goals in the first half before winning 6-1. The last time Creighton scored four goals in a single half against a conference opponent was Oct. 24, 2015, also against Villanova (four in first half).Â
Gutierrez found the back of the net during the 51st and 84th minutes and tallied an assist on the game-winner as the senior recorded five points in a single match for the second time in his career as a Bluejay. The Omaha native leads Creighton with 14 points this season from six goals and two assists, including three goals and one helper during BIG EAST matches. Gutierrez now owns 21 goals and 21 assists (63 points) during his five-year collegiate career (three years at UNO, two years at Creighton).
Duncan McGuire tallied the game-winning goal during the 79th minute on Wednesday afternoon. McGuire received a pass from Gutierrez before one-timing the ball from a hop and scoring his first goal of the season to break a 2-2 tie and give the Bluejays a one-goal edge.
After a scoreless first half, Gutierrez scored his fifth goal of the year with a penalty kick during the 51st minute. The senior drew a foul inside the right edge of the 18-yard box to set up the Bluejays' fourth PK attempt during 2021. Gutierrez calmly sent the ball into the back of the net for his second goal during BIG EAST play this season.
Creighton extended its lead just eight minutes after the first tally. The Bluejays used just four passes to transition from their defensive third of the field to the attacking third. Diego Dutilh received the third pass from Manu Toledano before Dutilh dribbled to the top of the box and found a streaking Toledano who touched the ball around the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. The goal marked Toledano's fourth of the season, while Dutilh tallied the first assist in his collegiate career.Â
Villanova quickly cut its deficit in half with a goal of its own less than 30 seconds after the second Bluejay goal. A Wildcat attacker was fouled in the box on an attempted cross to set up a penalty kick attempt for the home team. Kruse guessed correctly on the PK attempt and deflected the ball before it flipped up and over his body and into the back of the net.
The Wildcats knotted the match at 2-2 during the 74th minute as Villanova converted on a corner kick opportunity before Creighton regained its lead in the 79th minute with the game-winner and added an insurance goal in the 84th from an individual effort by Gutierrez.
Gutierrez scored the final goal by receiving a pass from Musa Qongo at midfield, sprinting down the sideline, changing direction towards the center of the field and positioning himself in the middle of the 18-yard box before firing a right-footed shot into the back of the net.Â
Creighton held a 9-6 edge in shots -- 4-0 on goal -- and 6-1 advantage in corners after the opening 45 minutes. Eight different players recorded at least one shot in the opening half for the Bluejays, but none broke the scoreless deadlock.Â
Kruse did not need to make a save during the first half and ended the match with four stops.
The Bluejays ended the match with a 19-14 advantage in shots (10-6 on goal) and 8-3 edge in corner kicks.Â
Creighton will stay on the road and prepare for a Saturday night match at UConn. Kickoff between the Bluejays and Huskies is scheduled for 6 p.m. Central at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Connecticut.Â
