Indianapolis, Ind. -- The Creighton men's soccer team earned a critical 2-0 road win over Butler on Saturday, October 30th. Diego Gutierrez led the way for the Bluejays with an assist and a goal in the win.
Creighton climbed to 7-6-2 on the season and 4-4-1 in BIG EAST action following Saturday's result, while Butler dropped to 6-8-2 overall and 4-4-1 in conference play.
The Bluejays were the more aggressive team from the start, out shooting Butler 10-2 in the first half. That attacking nature gave Creighton a break away chance in the 15th minute, then a penalty kick in the 26th. Butler goalkeeper Gabriel Gjergji denied each opportunity, yet the Bluejay attack remained undaunted.
Early in the second half the Bluejays broke through as Gutierrez found Mark O'Neil centered in front of the goal on a corner. O'Neil sent the ball into the net untouched with a head flick to make it 1-0 at the 58:40 mark, it was O'Neil's first goal of the season.
Just over four minutes later it was Gutierrez finding the back of the net (62:56). Dominic Briggs set the play in motion, finding Gutierrez along the right ride of the pitch. The Bluejay senior sliced a shot past Gjergi from 15-yards away for his ninth goal of the season.
Creighton switched to a defensive mode over the final 25 minutes, running out the clock to bring home three points.
The Bluejays closed the match with a shot advantage of 19-10 and a 9-2 edge on corners.
