Men's Soccer Beats #16 Providence, Earns BIG EAST Tourney Home Match

Bluejays will be No. 4 seed and host Villanova on Saturday
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's soccer team stretched its unbeaten streak to six, keeping its season alive with a 2-1 victory over No. 16 Providence on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at Morrison Stadium.
With the win, Creighton (8-6-2, 5-4-1 BIG EAST) will be the No. 4 seed and host Villanova on Saturday at 6:00 (CT) in the quarterfinals of the 2021 BIG EAST Championship presented by JEEP. Providence, which learned it was locked into the No. 2 seed with a first round bye before taking the field for the second half, is now (9-3-4, 5-2-3 BIG EAST).
Creighton scored the initial goal of the game in the fourth minute (3:05) as Mark O'Neill scored his second goal in as many games with a header to the near post off a corner kick feed from Diego Gutierrez.
The Friars evened the score in the 12th minute on an Bluejay own goal, as a failed clearance attempt ended up in the back of the net.
Undaunted, Creighton took a 2-1 lead just four minutes later (15:16) on the sixth goal of the season from freshman Manu Toledano. The Spaniard controlled a pass into the box, turned and fired with his left foot into the side netting.
Midway through the second half Toledano just missed extended the lead to 3-1 with a breakaway, but his shot sailed wide to the left.
The Bluejays used a stifling defense to lock Providence down throughout the rest of the match. Goalkeeper Paul Kruse needed to make just five saves in the match, despite the Friars firing off 14 shots in the contest.
Creighton honored eight men prior to the game as part of Senior Day festivities.
