Kendra Wait earns Defensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week honors
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Volleyball's Kendra Wait was named Freshman of the Week as well as Defensive Player of the Week by the BIG EAST Conference on Monday, Nov. 1.
It's Wait's fifth time being honored as Freshman of the Week, having also been recognized on Aug. 30, Sept. 13, Sept. 20 and Sept. 27. Wait is third Bluejay ever to be a five-time conference Freshman of the Week, joining Keeley Davis (10 times in 2019) and Jaali Winters (six times in 2015). Both Davis and Winters went on to be named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and First Team All-BIG EAST every season of their careers to date. This is the first Defensive Player of the Week recognition for the native of Gardner, Kan.
Wait averaged 9.57 assists, 5.00 digs, 1.57 kills and 1.00 blocks per set on .400 hitting as Creighton moved into a tie for first place in the BIG EAST with road wins at Marquette (3-1) and DePaul (3-0).
Â
Wait opened her week with 40 assists, 21 digs, six kills and two blocks in a 3-1 win at Marquette. Wait's 21 digs were a season-high as she became just the seventh different player in Bluejay 40 assists and 20 digs in a match, and first since former BIG EAST Player of the Year Lydia Dimke in 2016.
Â
She then had 27 assists, 14 digs, five blocks and five kills on .500 hitting in the sweep at DePaul, her team-high 12th double-double of the fall.
Â
Wait continues to lead the BIG EAST with 10.51 assists per set, and her 878 assists are 89 more than any other freshman on a top-25 team, far ahead of Stanford's Kami Miner (789) and Kentucky's Emma Grome (787).
St. John's Rachele Rastelli was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week after posting 5.30 kills per set during a 1-1 week for the Red Storm.
Ranked No. 24 nationally, Creighton (22-3, 10-2 BIG EAST) is home this weekend when it takes on Xavier on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Butler on Sunday at 1 p.m.
