Bluejay freshman averaged 13.0 points and 6.0 assists last week
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton men's basketball guard Ryan Nembhard has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after helping the Bluejays to a pair of victories to open the season.
Nembhard averaged 13.0 points, 6.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game, making 11-of-20 (55 percent) field goal attempts.
Nembhard (along with senior transfer Ryan Hawkins) became the first Bluejay in more than 40 years to debut with a double-double as he had 15 points, 10 assists and four rebounds vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Aurora, Ontario, Canada native's 10 helpers were the most by a CU freshman since Marcus Zegarowski in 2019 and most in a CU opener by any Bluejay since Edward St. Fleur in 1996. He was also the nation's only freshman to distribute double-digit assists on the opening night of the college hoops season.
On Thursday, Nembhard had 11 points, four rebounds and two assists. Nine of his points came after intermission as he played all 20 minutes of turnover-free basketball as Creighton overcame another halftime deficit in a 51-44 victory vs. Kennesaw State
Creighton (2-0) is back in action on Tuesday at 6 p.m. when it visits Nebraska in a Gavitt Tipoff Games contest that will be nationally televised on FS1.
